Chapter 5 - The Corporate Takeover

News of the boardroom coup hit the financial markets before the afternoon trading bell even rang. Headlines across economic journals and digital news platforms screamed the same shocking reality: VALLE EMPIRE EARTHQUAKE: FOUNDER SEBASTIAN VALLE RECLAIMS CONTROL, INSTALLS ESTRANGED GRANDDAUGHTER CHARLOTTE AS MANAGING DIRECTOR OF FLAGSHIP REAL ESTATE.

Inside her new corner office on the forty-sixth floor, Charlotte stood looking out over the city. The room was vast, minimalist, and smelled faintly of fresh mahogany and white orchids. It was a stark contrast to the cramped, dusty rooms she had inhabited for nearly a decade.

There was a soft knock at the door, and Daniel Reed entered, carrying a heavy leather-bound ledger and a tablet.

“Director Valle,” Daniel said respectfully, offering a slight bow of his head. “The department heads have gathered in the executive conference room downstairs. They are waiting for your opening address.”

Charlotte turned around, smoothing the lapels of her suit jacket. “Thank you, Daniel. How is the staff reacting to the transition?”

“With a mixture of shock and cautious optimism,” Daniel admitted with a small, appreciative smile. “Your aunt ruled through fear and intimidation. Many of the senior managers have quietly expressed relief that someone with actual integrity is finally at the helm. Though... there are still a few old loyalists loyal to Margaret whispering that you won't last a month.”

“Let them whisper,” Charlotte said calmly, walking toward the door with measured steps. “Action speaks louder than rumors.”

When Charlotte stepped into the executive conference room, twenty senior executives—all impeccably dressed, older, and visibly tense—turned their attention toward her. Among them were several individuals who had knowingly looked the other way while Margaret abused her corporate power.

Charlotte didn't sit down at the head of the table immediately. She walked slowly around the perimeter of the room, her eyes meeting each executive one by one. The silence in the room was absolute; you could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning units through the ceiling vents.

“I know what many of you are thinking,” Charlotte began, her voice carrying a calm, resonant strength that commanded the entire room. “You’re looking at someone you expected to remain buried in obscurity. You’re wondering if I’m here for vengeance, or if I’m simply a placeholder for my grandfather.”

She stopped walking and rested her hands on the back of an empty leather chair.

“Let me be clear,” Charlotte continued, her gaze sharpening. “I am not here to play games. The era of embezzlement, intimidation, and using corporate titles as personal piggy banks is over, effective immediately. Every department will undergo a complete forensic audit starting tonight. If you’ve been honest, you have nothing to fear. If you were complicit in my aunt's illegal operations, clean out your desk before security escorts you out.”

A heavy gulp echoed from the back of the room. No one dared to raise a voice or question her authority. The terrified respect in the room was palpable.
