Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By Monday morning, the financial world erupted into utter madness.
The headlines on Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal dominated every television screen across the country:
I sat at the marble island in Adrian’s kitchen, sipping fresh orange juice while Lily drew a picture of a cat on an iPad Adrian had bought her the previous evening. She was wearing a soft yellow cashmere dress, her hair perfectly braided by Mrs. Gable, looking like a little princess.
Adrian walked into the kitchen wearing a dark navy bespoke suit, putting on his wristwatch. He looked like the formidable billionaire titan the world knew, but the moment his eyes fell on Lily, his expression softened into pure tenderness.
"Good morning, my little bird," Adrian said, leaning down to kiss the top of Lily's head.
Lily beamed, holding up the iPad. "Look, Adrian! I drew a cat with red boots!"
Adrian’s eyes lit up. He sat down beside her, taking the iPad as if it were a priceless piece of fine art. "This is the most incredible cat I have ever seen. We are going to print this out and frame it in my main office downtown."
"Really?" Lily squeaked, her grey eyes sparkling.
"Absolutely," Adrian promised. He looked across the counter at me, his smile fading into a serious, protective expression. "Elena, Malcolm and I are heading to the Vale Harbor headquarters for an emergency board meeting at ten. My mother’s legal team is attempting to post her bail and file an emergency injunction to block your joint trust."
I set my juice glass down, my hands trembling slightly. "Can they block it?"
"Not legally," Adrian said smoothly, coming around the counter to stand beside me. He laid a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "My father’s succession document was notarized by three independent judges and stored in a federal vault. It is airtight. But my mother’s allies on the board—specifically Arthur Vance, Charlotte Vance’s father—are going to fight us to protect their own shares."
"Charlotte Vance," I repeated, the name bitter on my tongue. "The woman your mother wanted you to marry."
"Charlotte and her father own twenty percent of Vale Freight," Adrian explained. "If my father’s trust vests in Lily, Arthur Vance loses his position as Chairman of the Board. He is desperate. Which means he will be dangerous."
"What do you need me to do?" I asked, standing up tall. "I’m not hiding in an apartment anymore, Adrian. I fought for seven years to protect my daughter from poverty. I won't let corporate sharks scare me now."
A slow, proud smile touched Adrian’s lips. "That is the woman I fell in love with."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a sleek black security card. "Malcolm’s team has arranged a team of six private security officers to guard this penthouse twenty-four seven. But for the board meeting... I want you and Lily by my side."
May you like
"At the board meeting?" I blinked, surprised.
"It’s time the world sees the real owners of Vale Harbor," Adrian said, his voice dropping into that deep, unyielding tone. "And it’s time Charlotte Vance learns that her seven-year scheme is over."
