Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Justice
Six months later, the grand trial of Eleanor Vale and Arthur Vance concluded at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago.
The trial had been a national spectacle, revealing the dark, twisted underbelly of one of America's wealthiest dynasties. But thanks to the overwhelming evidence provided by Malcolm Reed, Victoria Vance, and the recovered financial logs, the jury took less than two hours to reach a unanimous verdict.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Adrian and Malcolm.
Eleanor Vale stood at the defense table in a navy prison jumpsuit, her hair completely grey, her posture slouched and broken. Beside her, Arthur Vance looked equally defeated.
The judge knocked his heavy oak gavel.
"Eleanor Vale," the judge announced, his stern voice echoing off the high ceilings. "For the crimes of federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, forgery, and criminal identity suppression, you are hereby sentenced to fourteen years in a federal correctional facility without the possibility of parole."
Eleanor flinched, clutching her chest, a low moan escaping her lips.
"Furthermore," the judge continued, "full financial restitution of twelve million dollars shall be seized from your remaining personal liquid assets and transferred to the protective trust of Lily Rivera-Vale."
The gallery murmured loudly. News reporters scribbled frantically on their pads.
Eleanor slowly turned her head toward the gallery. Her hollow, sunken eyes met mine. For seven years, she had looked down on me as a worthless burden, a nobody who didn't deserve to breathe the same air as her family.
Now, she was stripped of her title, her fortune, and her freedom, while the girl she had tried to erase sat holding her son's hand, wearing the crown of the Vale dynasty.
I didn't look at Eleanor with hatred or vengeance. I looked at her with a quiet, calm pity.

Adrian stood up, taking my hand, and turned his back on his mother forever.
