Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

Life slowly settled into a beautiful, peaceful rhythm.

Lily started attending a prestigious private academy in Chicago, where her favorite activity was painting and playing soccer. Adrian adjusted his corporate schedule, refusing to take meetings before nine in the morning or after four in the afternoon so he could cook breakfast for Lily and pick her up from school every day.

The billionaire titan who once terrified boardrooms could now be seen sitting on a tiny wooden chair in Lily’s playroom, wearing a plastic crown while sipping imaginary tea from a pink cup.

However, peace in a family like the Vales was never entirely unthreatened.

One rainy Thursday afternoon, while Adrian was downtown finalizing a shipping merger, Mrs. Gable informed me that a visitor was waiting at the main security gate.

I walked down to the security monitors in the study.

Standing at the iron gate in a wet trench coat was a woman I hadn't seen in seven years: Victoria Vance, Charlotte Vance’s mother and Eleanor’s long-time socialite confidante.

"Let her through," I told the head security officer. "Bring her to the formal parlor."

Ten minutes later, Victoria Vance stepped into the parlor. She was a frail-looking woman with sharp features, her expensive clothes wet from the rain. She looked exhausted, broken by her husband's arrest and her family's complete social ruin.

"Elena," Victoria said, her voice shaking as she clutched a leather pouch to her chest. "Thank you for seeing me."

"Why are you here, Victoria?" I asked calmly, sitting on a velvet armchair, my posture regal and composed. "If this is about getting Adrian to drop the civil charges against your husband, you are wasting your time."

"No," Victoria whispered, shaking her head. Tears filled her eyes. "My husband is guilty. Charlotte is bitter. I know my family ruined your life, Elena. I know what Eleanor did to you."

She stepped forward and laid the leather pouch on the coffee table between us.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Before Arthur was arrested," Victoria explained, her voice cracking, "he tried to burn his private files. I saved this from the fireplace. It's... it's Julian’s private diary from his last year of life. And the original, unedited video recording of his final request."

I stared at the pouch. "Why are you giving this to me?"

May you like

Victoria looked down at her lap, weeping softly. "Because seven years ago, I saw Eleanor hand you that fake letter in your apartment. I stood outside in the hallway and heard you crying inside while you held your belly. I was a coward, Elena. I stayed silent because I wanted my daughter to marry a billionaire. And for seven years, that guilt has eaten my soul away."

She wiped her tears and looked at me with sincere, desperate eyes. "Julian loved you, Elena. He knew you were carrying his grandchild. He spent his final months trying to protect you. You deserve to hear his real words."
