Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The glass-and-steel skyscraper of Vale Harbor & Freight towered seventy stories above the Chicago River.

When Adrian’s armored SUV pulled up to the private executive entrance, dozens of photojournalists and news crews flooded the sidewalk, flashbulbs popping continuously through the tinted windows.

Adrian stepped out first, adjusting his suit jacket. He reached back into the vehicle and held out his hand to me. I took it, stepping onto the concrete in a stunning emerald wool coat and black heels—a gift from Adrian’s private stylist.

Then Adrian reached back in and lifted six-year-old Lily into his arms, carrying her right past the roaring crowd of reporters.

"Mr. Vale! Is this your daughter?!"

"Is Eleanor Vale being removed from the board?!"

"Who is the woman with you?!"

Adrian ignored the chaotic shouting, shielding Lily’s face against his shoulder as security cleared a path into the private executive elevators.

Minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the 70th-floor boardroom swung open.

The room was filled with fifteen wealthy board members seated around a thirty-foot mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance—a white-haired, predatory man in his sixties—and beside him sat his daughter, Charlotte Vance, dressed in a sharp beige designer suit, her eyes flashing with ice.

The room fell dead silent as Adrian walked in, holding my hand, with Lily seated comfortably in his arm.

"Adrian," Arthur Vance sneered, standing up and leaning over the mahogany table. "What is the meaning of this circus? Bringing an illegitimate child and a street girl into a high-level corporate governance meeting?"

Charlotte looked at me, her lip curling in disgust. "Elena Rivera. I see you finally found a way to leach off the Vale name."

Before I could speak, Adrian took two deliberate steps toward the table. The sheer intimidation in his presence made Arthur Vance unconsciously lean back.

"Watch your mouth, Charlotte," Adrian warned, his voice dangerously calm. "You are speaking to the co-trustee of the controlling interest of this company. And the child you just called illegitimate owns fifty-one percent of everything you stand on."

"That trust document is invalid!" Charlotte snapped, standing up. "Your mother is currently being framed by a crooked attorney! My father and I have already filed a motion in probate court to freeze all stock transfers until a full psychiatric evaluation of your late father is conducted!"

"Is that so?" a deep voice echoed from the doorway.

Malcolm Reed walked into the boardroom, flanked by two federal prosecutors and a detective from the Financial Crimes Division.

"Arthur Vance," Malcolm said, throwing a heavy blue folder onto the center of the mahogany table. "Before you discuss probate court, perhaps you should explain to the board why three million dollars was transferred from Vale Harbor’s offshore accounts into your private shell company in the Cayman Islands forty-eight hours ago."

Arthur went pale. "What?!"

"It appears Eleanor Vale wasn't the only one stealing from the company," the federal prosecutor announced, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his coat. "Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for federal money laundering, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit identity theft."

Charlotte gasped, grabbing her father’s arm. "Father! No!"

"Take him away," the prosecutor ordered.

Two federal agents moved in, pulling Arthur Vance’s hands behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs over his wrists before the entire stunned board.

Charlotte turned her terrified, tear-streaked face toward Adrian. "Adrian! Please! Talk to them! We’ve known each other since we were children! My family built this company with yours!"

Adrian looked at Charlotte with a cold, detached indifference.

"Your family helped my mother ruin seven years of my daughter's life, Charlotte," Adrian said quietly. "You knew Lily existed. You knew about the forged letters. And you stayed silent because you wanted a ring on your finger and a share of my father's empire."

He gestured toward the door. "Leave this building. If I ever see your face near my family again, I will personally fund every lawsuit necessary to bankrupt you."

Charlotte stood frozen, realizing her power, her status, and her ambitions had crumbled into dust in a single afternoon. She turned and fled the boardroom, sobbing hysterically into her hands.

Adrian turned back to the remaining board members, who were all staring at him in utter awe and fear.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian announced, pulling out the head chair at the mahogany table and helping me sit down, before placing Lily on his lap. "Let's begin the meeting."
