Chapter 3 - THE UNSEEN WAR

Over the next four weeks, the Vance Estate became a sanctuary of recovery and quiet transformation.
Under the care of Mrs. Gable and Dr. Thorne, Hannah’s frail body began to mend. Her severe malnutrition gave way to healthy weight, her raw, blistered feet healed under specialized medical salves, and the dark circles under her eyes disappeared.
Yet the emotional scars ran deep. In the first week, Hannah would wake up gasping in the middle of the night, convinced the room was filling with smoke, or that she was still lying on the wet concrete in the freezing rain.
Every time she woke up, she found Arthur sitting in the armchair in the corner of her bedroom, working quietly on his laptop under a dim lamp, keeping watch over her sleep.
"You don't have to stay here all night, Uncle Arthur," Hannah said quietly one evening, sitting up in her bed as a gentle snow fell outside her window.
Arthur closed his laptop and looked at her with a gentle smile. It was the first time she had called him 'Uncle', and a subtle light of emotion flashed across his sharp face.
"I promised myself three years ago that if I ever found you, I would never let you face the dark alone again," Arthur said gently. "Besides, I do my best work at night."
By the second month, Arthur began preparing the second phase of their plan.
He brought in private tutors to help Hannah catch up on the three years of education she had missed while living on the streets. Hannah proved to be brilliantly sharp, absorbing books on mathematics, history, and literature with a hunger born of long deprivation.
One afternoon, Arthur invited Hannah into his master study—a massive room lined with mahogany bookshelves and monitors displaying real-time financial charts.
"Sterling is holding the annual Vance Global Shareholder Gala in three weeks," Arthur said, pointing to a document on his desk. "He intends to execute a final vote to dissolve Clara’s trust and absorb her remaining forty percent of stock into his personal portfolio, citing her death and the absence of an heir."
Hannah walked up to the desk, looking at the corporate documents. "If he absorbs those shares, he gains absolute control over the company."
"Precisely," Arthur nodded. "Which is why we are going to let him proceed with the vote until the very last second."
"And then?" Hannah asked, her voice steady and her eyes clear.
Arthur opened a leather folder, revealing a certified DNA report matching Hannah’s genetic code to Clara Vance, alongside an original, untouched copy of Clara’s will that Arthur had recovered from a secure Swiss vault six months earlier.
"And then," Arthur smiled, a dangerous, brilliant edge to his expression, "my niece will walk into the ballroom and claim her kingdom."

Hannah looked at her reflection in the dark window pane. The thin, dirty, shoeless girl who had laid dying on the wet asphalt was gone. In her place stood a young woman with clear eyes, standing tall in a soft cashmere sweater, backed by an uncle who would tear down empires to keep her safe.
"Teach me what I need to know," Hannah said firmly. "I want to be ready."
