Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT OF LIGHTS AND SHADOWS

The night of the Vance Global Annual Shareholder Gala arrived under a crisp, star-filled Chicago sky.
The grand ballroom of the Halston Grand Hotel was a spectacle of opulent luxury. Massive crystal chandeliers cast warm golden light over three hundred distinguished guests—multimillionaire investors, international shipping magnates, politicians, and high-society journalists.
At the head of the ballroom stood a raised stage featuring a massive LED screen displaying the company logo alongside a large digital banner: VANCE GLOBAL: LEADING THE FUTURE.
Richard Sterling stood near the center stage, wearing an expensive black tuxedo and holding a glass of vintage champagne. At sixty-two, Sterling carried himself with the supreme, arrogant confidence of a man who believed he had outmaneuvered fate itself. Beside him stood his head of security, Victor, scanning the crowd with sharp, paranoid eyes.
"Is Arthur here yet?" Sterling asked quietly, taking a sip of champagne.
"His car just arrived at the valet, sir," Victor reported quietly. "He came alone."
Sterling smiled with dark satisfaction. "Good. He lost. Tonight, once the board votes to dissolve Clara’s trust, Arthur’s thirty percent share will be rendered powerless against my sixty percent control. The company is mine."
At 8:30 PM, the lights in the hall dimmed slightly as Sterling took the stage, stepping up to the podium amid warm applause from the crowd.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Sterling began, his voice echoing smoothly through the high-definition sound system. "Tonight, we celebrate ten years of unprecedented growth at Vance Global. But to secure our future, we must close a painful chapter of our past."
In the back row of the ballroom, Arthur Vance walked in quietly, standing with his arms folded across his chest, watching Sterling with an expression of pure, icy detachment.
Sterling gestured toward a large legal document displayed on the LED screen behind him.
"Three years ago, we suffered the tragic loss of my dear partner, Clara Vance," Sterling lied smoothly, adopting a solemn expression. "Despite our exhaustive efforts, no living heir was ever identified. Therefore, in accordance with corporate bylaws, the board will now execute the formal dissolution of Clara Vance’s trust, absorbing her shares to ensure company stability."
A few board members nodded, preparing to raise their electronic voting pads.

"I motion for an immediate vote," Sterling declared, picking up a gold fountain pen to sign the master transfer document on the podium.
"I object," a calm, clear voice resonated from the back of the ballroom.
