Chapter 5 - THE STRATAGEM

Three days before the gala, the final piece of Arthur’s legal trap fell into place.

In a private meeting inside a high-security conference room downtown, Arthur met with federal prosecutors from the United States Attorney’s Office and lead investigators from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division.

Beside Arthur sat Rebecca Sloan, the brilliant corporate attorney who had managed the Vance family's private legal affairs for over two decades.

"We have verified the DNA match, Mr. Vance," the lead prosecutor, Amanda Hayes, stated, examining the certified reports. "Hannah Elizabeth Vance is legally alive and confirmed as the sole heir to Clara Vance’s estate and her forty percent share of Vance Global."

"Which means," Rebecca added smoothly, "that Richard Sterling's attempt to liquidate those shares at Thursday’s gala constitutes criminal fraud, forgery, and corporate embezzlement."

Prosecutor Hayes nodded grimly. "We also reviewed the arson investigation files from the 2023 fire on 4th Street. With the evidence your private investigators retrieved from Sterling's offshore communications, we have enough to reopen the homicide investigation against Sterling and his operative, Victor."

"I don't just want him arrested, Prosecutor Hayes," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "I want him arrested on live television, in front of the entire international board of directors, at the exact moment he attempts to sign the illegal share transfer."

Hayes smiled thinly. "We can arrange that. Federal agents will be stationed at every exit of the Halston Grand Hotel ballroom."

When Arthur returned to the estate that evening, he brought a large black garment bag into Hannah’s room.

He unzipped the bag, revealing an exquisite floor-length gown made of deep midnight-blue velvet, featuring subtle silver embroidery along the cuffs and neckline—a modern, elegant replica of the dress Clara Vance had worn when she was introduced to the corporate board fifteen years earlier.

Beside the gown lay a polished mahogany jewelry box. Inside rested a restored platinum necklace set with sapphire stones—the Vance family heirloom that had belonged to Hannah’s grandmother.

Hannah touched the cool silver of the necklace, her eyes shining with tears.

"Your mother would be so proud of you, Hannah," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. "Thursday night, you show them who you are."

Hannah looked at her reflection in the mirror, wearing the midnight-blue gown and the sapphire necklace. The shoeless street child was gone forever. The true heir of Vance Global had arrived.
