Chapter 1 - THE ASHES OF THE SACRAMENT

The flashing blue and red emergency lights painted the chapel’s stained-glass saints in rhythmic, violent pulses of violet and crimson. Outside, the downpour had intensified into a squall, beating against the stone facade like a fist demanding entry. Inside, the silence was absolute—heavy, toxic, and suffocating.

Ethan Parker stood motionless, staring at the translucent plastic sleeve in his hand. The ink of his own signature, signed eight years ago in a desperate, ambitious fever dream, seemed to burn through the paper. No matter what I say later. Six words that sentenced his past to an enforced amnesia, buying his corporate empire at the cost of his soul.

Beside him, Daniel Mercer stepped forward, his federal prosecutor persona taking complete precedence over his role as best man. "Ethan, don't say another word. Not to her, not to anyone." Daniel turned to the local law enforcement officers rushing through the double doors, rain streaming off their coats. "I am Daniel Mercer, Senior Assistant United States Attorney. This venue is now an active crime scene regarding kidnapping, corporate espionage, and conspiracy. Secure the perimeter immediately."

Olivia Hale didn't flinch. She pulled the ivory silk veil from her hair with a fluid, deliberate gesture, dropping it onto the marble floor where it lay like discarded skin. Her dark eyes, cold and sharp as obsidian, fixed entirely on Ethan.

"You think this makes you a martyr, Ethan?" Olivia whispered, her voice carrying beneath the rain and the low murmur of fleeing guests. "You signed that contract because you were terrified of failing. You were a brilliant nobody drowning in debt, terrified that love would keep you poor. I didn't ruin your life—I constructed it. Every board seat, every acquisition, every dollar in your account exists because I kept you clean of distractions."

"She isn't a distraction," Ethan said, his voice raw, turning his head slowly to look at Nora and little Mia.

Mia was shivering, clutching Nora’s coat with white knuckles. Nora stood her ground, her face pale, the faint scar near her temple standing out sharply under the flickering candlelight. For years, she had believed Ethan had abandoned her, seduced by the wealth and prestige of his new life. Finding out that he had been manipulated—and that he had willingly erased his own past—was a realization that cut deeper than any physical wound.

"Ethan," Nora said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "We have to leave. She has people everywhere. When she realizes the flash drive has the encrypted files, she won't just stand here and talk."

The police officers moved in, approaching Olivia. "Ms. Hale, we need you to come with us for questioning based on the digital evidence provided."

Olivia offered her wrists without a fight, a terrifyingly calm smile playing on her lips. "By all means, officers. But do check the jurisdiction of those hotel recordings. And ask Ethan where the original funding for his firm's core patent came from. You'll find my father's holding company owns sixty percent of the intellectual property. If I go down, Parker Tech collapses by morning."

She looked at Ethan one last time as she was led away through the whispering crowd of billionaires, politicians, and socialites. "You can try to remember who you were, Ethan. But you'll realize that man died the day you hired me."
