Chapter 9 - REBUILDING THE FOUNDATION

The new yellow house was located on a quiet hillside overlooking a pristine mountain lake. It wasn't a billionaire's mega-mansion with cold marble floors and towering security gates; it was a spacious, warm, five-bedroom home made of cedar and stone, surrounded by wild apple trees and lavender fields.
For the next six months, Ethan stepped back entirely from the daily management of Parker Tech, appointing a trusted, ethical board to handle corporate affairs. He dedicated every single day to his family.
He spent his mornings learning how to cook pancake batter without burning it—a skill Mia thoroughly evaluated every Saturday. He spent his afternoons teaching Mia how to ride a bicycle on the paved path down to the lake, running behind her with his hands on the seat until she finally pedaled on her own, her laughter echoing across the water.
One evening, after Mia had fallen asleep in her new bedroom—which was painted like a starry night sky—Ethan and Nora sat together on the wide front porch. A light spring rain was falling, clicking softly against the glass lantern above them.
Ethan handed Nora a cup of hot chamomile tea, sitting beside her on the wooden porch swing.
"You fixed the light," Nora observed softly, glancing up at the lantern.
"First thing I did," Ethan smiled. He looked out over the dark lake reflecting the moonlight. "Nora, there are still days where I wake up and feel a phantom ache in my chest, like I'm supposed to be rushing to a board meeting or fixing a crisis."
"And then what do you do?" Nora asked, leaning her head against his shoulder.
"I look at you," Ethan said softly, taking her hand. "And I remember that the only business that ever mattered was building a life with you."

Nora turned to face him, looking deep into his eyes. "I spent eight years hating you, Ethan. I thought you had thrown us away like trash. But watching you these last six months... watching you learn how to be a father again, watching you care for us... I realized the man I loved never left. He was just waiting for us to bring him home."
Ethan leaned in, his heart beating with a deep, peaceful rhythm, and kissed her—a soft, tender kiss that carried eight years of longing, grief, and rediscovered hope.
