Chapter 5 - THE YELLOW HOUSE ON MAPLE STREET

While Daniel handled the legal fallout and the formal arrests of the Hale network, Ethan took a two-day leave from Parker Tech, turning over daily operations to an independent trustee.

He drove a simple, rented SUV out of the city, heading two hours north to a small town named Oakridge. Beside him in the passenger seat was Nora, while Mia slept soundly in the back seat with a plush bear Ethan had bought her at a gas station.

They pulled up to a small, single-story house at the end of Maple Street.

The house had yellow paint that was peeling at the corners. The front porch steps sagged slightly, and the small lawn was overgrown with wild clover. It was the house from the photograph.

Ethan stepped out of the car, the cool afternoon air smelling of damp pine and autumn leaves. He stood at the edge of the driveway, his heart pounding in his chest—not with the artificial terror of his 3:17 a.m. nightmares, but with the profound, aching weight of real memory returning.

Nora walked up beside him, wrapping her cardigan tight around her waist. "You remembered the address?"

"It came back to me when I signed Richard Hale's arrest warrant," Ethan whispered. "I sat at that kitchen table, didn't I? Writing code until four in the morning while you brewed chamomile tea."

"You did," Nora said, a small, sad smile gracing her lips. "And every time you made a breakthrough, you'd wake up Mia just to show her a glowing green screen she couldn't understand."

Ethan walked up the porch steps. He reached up and touched the porch light fixture. It was brand new, gleaming chrome against the worn wood—installed right before he was taken.

"I thought I lost everything, Nora," Ethan said, turning to her, tears welling in his eyes. "When I stood in that chapel, looking at that contract with my name on it, I hated myself. I thought I was a monster who traded his family for money."

Nora walked up the steps and stood beside him, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "You weren't a monster, Ethan. You were a young, terrified man surrounded by predators who knew how to exploit your deepest fear—the fear of letting us down. Olivia didn't create your ambition; she twisted it into a cage."

Mia ran up the steps, holding her plush bear. "Daddy, is this our home?"

Ethan knelt down, taking Mia into his arms and pulling Nora into the embrace. "It was our home, sweetie. But we're going to build a new one—together, somewhere safe."

For the first time in eight years, the deep, hollow void inside Ethan’s chest felt like it was beginning to heal.
