Chapter 3 - The Cage of Silk

The night did not end in peace; it ended in lockdown.
Within an hour of the revelation, the Moretti estate was placed on maximum security alert. Sixty heavy-armed guards lined the perimeter fence, motion-sensor lights illuminated every square inch of the grounds, and signal-jamming devices were activated to ensure no communications left the property without Alessandro’s personal authorization.
Vanessa Bellini was dragged down into the estate's subterranean security cells, shrieking curses until the heavy steel doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice entirely.
Meanwhile, Elena and Emma were escorted not to the modest servants' quarters in the back wing, but to the grand master suite on the top floor—a luxurious suite of rooms lined with silk wallpaper, Persian rugs, and bulletproof glass windows overlooking the estate garden.
Elena stood near the king-sized bed, watching a team of female staff members set up a brand-new wooden crib, plush velvet armchairs, and piles of toys that had been rushed to the estate from a high-end luxury boutique in Manhattan at 2:00 AM.
Emma was already asleep in the middle of the massive bed, clutching a soft white teddy bear Alessandro had personally brought up from his private collection.
The door opened quietly, and Alessandro stepped inside.
He had changed out of his formal tuxedo into a dark charcoal dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked exhausted, his dark hair slightly disheveled, but his eyes were sharp and intensely focused.
"She sleeps deeply," Alessandro said softly, stepping toward the bed and looking down at his sleeping daughter.
"She’s had a long night," Elena replied, standing her ground with her arms crossed over her chest. "Mr. Moretti, we need to discuss our departure."
Alessandro slowly turned his head to look at her. "Departure?"
"Yes," Elena said firmly. "I proved to you that Emma is your daughter. You know the truth now. You know Vanessa was the traitor. You can handle your business, but Emma and I are leaving in the morning."
A quiet, dangerous smile flickered across Alessandro’s lips. "Dr. Vance, do you truly believe I am going to allow my only child—the rightful heir to everything I own—to walk out of my front gates to live in a rented apartment on a nurse's wage?"
"She has lived safely with me for three years without your millions!" Elena shot back, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the child. "I gave her a home, love, and safety! Bringing her into your world will put a target on her back!"
"The target was already placed on her back the night she was born!" Alessandro countered, taking a slow step toward her. "Do you think Vanessa acted alone? Do you think a pharmaceutical rep turned mafia mistress had the resources to bribe top hospital chiefs and hire professional hitmen without backing?"
Elena paused, her eyes widening slightly. "What are you saying?"
"Vanessa was a pawn," Alessandro said coldly. "Someone inside my syndicate—someone powerful enough to influence my inner circle—financed her plan. They wanted Isabella dead, they wanted my child dead, and they wanted to install Vanessa beside me so they could control the Moretti empire through her."
He stepped closer until he was standing directly in front of Elena, his height dominating the space between them.
"Whoever funded Vanessa still exists," Alessandro warned softly. "And tonight, three hundred people saw that my true daughter is alive. By tomorrow morning, every criminal family in New York, Miami, and Chicago will know that Emma Moretti is breathing. If you take her out of these gates, you will both be dead within forty-eight hours."
Elena felt a cold spike of fear strike her heart. She knew he was right. The moment Emma was exposed as the Moretti heir, her quiet, hidden life was shattered forever.
"Then what do you expect me to do?" Elena whispered, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. "Become your prisoner?"
"You are not my prisoner, Elena," Alessandro said, his tone softening slightly as he looked at her with an intensity that made her breath catch. "You are the woman who saved my daughter’s life. You are the only person on this planet I trust to keep her safe."
He reached out, his long fingers gently picking up a stray strand of chestnut hair that had fallen from her bun, tucking it behind her ear. Elena flinched slightly at the touch, but she didn't step back.
"You and Emma will stay here," Alessandro commanded softly. "Under my protection. In my house. Until I tear down every enemy who threatens my family."
"And if I refuse?" Elena challenged.
Alessandro looked down at his sleeping daughter, then back at Elena.
"You won't refuse," he said calmly. "Because whatever else you think of me, Dr. Vance... you love Emma more than your own life. And right now, I am the only shield capable of keeping the monsters away from her."

He turned on his heel and walked toward the door. Just before stepping out, he paused and looked back.
"Sleep well, Elena. Tomorrow, the war begins."
