Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Gift

However, in the world of syndicate royalty, peace is a fragile glass ornament easily shattered by the ghosts of the past.
Two weeks later, as preparations were being made for Emma’s formal fourth birthday celebration at the estate, a package arrived at the front security gate.
It was a large, beautifully wrapped gift box covered in white velvet ribbon, bearing an official card from the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. The security team scanned the package through X-ray machines, chemical detectors, and bomb-sniffing dogs.
Finding nothing hazardous, Marco personally brought the box up to the master living suite.
"It’s addressed directly to Little Miss Emma," Marco reported, placing the velvet box on the coffee table. "From the Bellini family estate in Milan. Vanessa's father."
Elena, who was organizing party decorations near the window, immediately froze. "Vanessa's father? The Italian syndicate patriarch?"
Alessandro, sitting at his desk reviewing corporate land deeds, stood up instantly, his brow furrowing in deep suspicion. "Antonio Bellini has been quiet since Vanessa was imprisoned. Why would he send a birthday gift to my daughter?"
"Should I dispose of it, Boss?" Marco asked, his hand hovering near his holster.
"No," Alessandro said, walking over. "Open it under containment protocol."
Marco pulled out a combat knife, sliced the velvet ribbon, and opened the lid.
Inside lay a magnificent antique porcelain doll dressed in a handcrafted silk gown—a rare, museum-quality collector's item worth tens of thousands of dollars. Beside the doll was an embossed parchment card written in elegant Italian calligraphy.
Alessandro picked up the card and read it silently. His face instantly drained of color.
"What does it say?" Elena asked, stepping up beside him, sensing the sudden surge of tension in the room.
Alessandro’s voice was dark and cold as ice. "'To the child who ruined my daughter’s destiny. Enjoy your temporary life. A Bellini always collects their debts.'"
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "It's a threat!"
"Marco!" Alessandro roared, dropping the card. "Evacuate Emma to the panic room immediately! Lockdown the entire wing!"
"Wait!" Elena yelled, her medical instincts suddenly taking over. She looked at the antique doll sitting inside the velvet box.
The doll’s white silk dress was lightly dusted with a fine, microscopic pale yellow powder—a substance so light it was almost invisible under normal indoor lighting, looking merely like age dust on old porcelain.
"Don't touch it!" Elena screamed, lunging forward and pulling Marco’s hand back inches before he touched the doll.
Alessandro grabbed Elena’s waist, pulling her back. "What is it?!"
"Castor bean extract... Ricin powder!" Elena said rapidly, her heart pounding in terror as she pointed at the faint yellow dust on the doll’s dress. "It’s a contact toxin! If a child touches that doll and puts her fingers in her mouth, she would suffer organ failure within six hours!"
A wave of pure, terrifying panic washed through the room.
"The X-ray scanners wouldn't pick up organic plant toxin!" Marco stammered in horror, realizing how close he had come to handing a lethal weapon directly to a four-year-old girl.
Alessandro stared at the poisoned doll.
The idea that someone had attempted to murder his innocent daughter with a poisoned toy inside his own home triggered an explosive, apocalyptic rage within him.
He pulled his pistol, aimed directly at the velvet box, and fired three heavy shots, shattering the antique porcelain doll into a thousand harmless pieces.
"MARCO!" Alessandro roared, his voice shaking the heavy glass windows of the suite. "Mobilize every operative we have in North America and Europe! Contact our contacts in Interpol!"

Alessandro turned his dark, terrifying eyes toward the window, looking out toward the Atlantic Ocean.
"Antonio Bellini just declared war on my child," Alessandro growled, his jaw tight enough to snap iron. "And I am going to burn his entire lineage to the ground."
