Chapter 8 - The Siege of Milan

The counter-strike was swift, devastating, and absolute.

Within forty-eight hours of the poisoned doll incident, Alessandro Moretti did not wait for the enemy to come to New York. He brought the full, terrifying weight of the Moretti empire directly to Italy.

Using his vast global network of private military contractors, intelligence operatives, and international banking contacts, Alessandro launched a synchronized economic and tactical assault on the Bellini crime family in Milan.

In a single night, every illegal shipping container belonging to the Bellini syndicate in Genoa was seized by international authorities via anonymous corporate tips. Millions of dollars in Bellini offshore accounts were frozen by Interpol, and Antonio Bellini’s private estate in the hills of Lake Como was surrounded by a hundred elite mercenaries wearing Moretti badges.

Alessandro stood on the terrace of a rented villa overlooking Lake Como, watching the distant lights of the Bellini compound through night-vision binoculars.

Beside him stood Elena, wearing a heavy winter coat against the cool Italian night air.

"You didn't have to come to Italy, Elena," Alessandro said softly, not lowering his binoculars. "You and Emma would have been safe at the fortress in New York."

"Emma is safe in New York with Marco and fifty guards," Elena replied quietly, stepping closer to him on the terrace. "I came because I am not letting you fight this darkness alone anymore, Alessandro."

Alessandro lowered the binoculars and turned to look at her. In the moonlight, her chestnut hair caught the pale light, her blue eyes filled with unwavering courage and devotion.

"Antonio Bellini thought he could touch my daughter," Alessandro said, his voice laced with heavy, lethal finality. "He thought because he was across the ocean, he was untouchable."

"He underestimated a father's love," Elena said gently, reaching out and placing her small, warm hand over his gloved fist. "And he underestimated the family we built."

Alessandro looked down at her hand, his expression softening completely. He turned his hand over, intertwining his fingers with hers, holding her tightly.

"When this night is over," Alessandro murmured, looking deeply into her eyes, "when the last threat to Emma is eliminated forever... I want to give you the life you deserve, Elena. No more fear. No more hiding. No more housekeeper uniforms."

He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. He opened it, revealing a magnificent diamond ring featuring a rare, flawless blue stone framed by platinum—the historic Moretti engagement ring passed down through three generations of syndicate matriarchs.

Elena gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at the brilliant gem.

"This belonged to my grandmother," Alessandro whispered softly. "Isabella never wore it; I kept it locked away in a vault because I never thought I would find a woman worthy of the Moretti name again."

He looked into Elena’s eyes with raw, honest vulnerability.

"Elena Vance... you saved my daughter. You saved my life. Will you honor me by becoming my wife, the matriarch of my family, and the mother of my children forever?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Elena’s cheeks. She looked at the ring, then looked up at the powerful, fierce man who stood before her, offering her his entire heart and empire.

"Yes," Elena wept softly, smiling through her tears. "Yes, Alessandro! I will!"

Alessandro slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He pulled her into his arms, cupping the back of her head, and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their fate together beneath the Italian stars.

An hour later, news arrived from Lake Como.

Antonio Bellini had surrendered without a single shot fired, agreeing to sign over all European assets, accept permanent exile to a remote island, and sign a binding blood oath never to set foot in the Western Hemisphere again.

The final threat to Emma Moretti was destroyed.
