Chapter 5 - The Lion's Den

Night fell over Manhattan like a heavy black velvet curtain. Rain slicked the streets, reflecting the neon lights of the city as a convoy of four bulletproof black SUVs tore through the traffic toward the Grand Hotel in Midtown.

In the back seat of the primary vehicle, Alessandro sat in total silence, adjusting the cuffs of his dark suit. Beside him sat Elena, wearing a sharp black dress, her hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail.

"I told you to stay at the estate with Emma," Alessandro said, his voice low against the hum of the engine.

"And I told you I’m not letting you fight this war without knowing the medical details," Elena replied firmly, turning to face him in the dim interior light. "If Dante Donati tries to claim that Emma isn't your daughter, I am the only licensed medical professional who can present the original DNA profiles, the hospital delivery logs, and the cold-chain evidence."

Alessandro stared at her. "You are risking your life, Elena. The High Council meeting is a shark tank. If shooting starts, I cannot guarantee your safety."

Elena looked him dead in the eye. "I spent three years hiding in poverty to keep your child safe. Do you really think a room full of men in tailored suits scares me?"

A rare, faint smirk touched Alessandro’s lips. "You truly are remarkable, Dr. Vance."

"Don't compliment me, Moretti," she said, looking out the rain-streaked window. "Just make sure we both get back home to Emma tonight."

The SUV pulled into the underground garage of the Grand Hotel. Dozens of heavily armed men wearing different syndicate badges lined the concrete walls. The air was thick with tension; every boss in New York had brought their private armies to the meeting.

Alessandro, Elena, and Marco were escorted up the private elevator to the penthouse ballroom.

When the doors opened, they stepped into a grand mahogany-paneled room centered around a massive oval conference table. Sitting around the table were the heads of the five major crime families of the city.

At the far end of the table sat Dante Donati—a broad-shouldered, silver-haired man in his late fifties, puffing calmly on a Cuban cigar.

"Alessandro!" Dante boomed, his voice echoing in the spacious room as he spread his arms wide in mock warmth. "You actually showed up! But I see you left the little miracle child at home. How disappointing."

The other bosses at the table murmured quietly among themselves, watching Alessandro with wary, calculative eyes.

Alessandro didn't take a seat. He walked straight to the center of the room, standing tall with his hands folded behind his back. Elena stood half a step behind his left shoulder, holding a sleek leather briefcase.

"Dante," Alessandro said, his tone devoid of any warmth. "You called an emergency session of the council. State your business so I can get back to my family."

Dante laughed loudly, blowing a plume of gray cigar smoke into the air. "Family? Is that what we're calling it now? Alessandro, we've known each other for twenty years. You were devastated when Isabella died. We all grieved with you. But this story about a hidden daughter? A housekeeper who stole the baby? A fake pregnancy with Vanessa?"

Dante shook his head, looking around at the other bosses.

"It sounds like the desperate fantasy of a man who knows his time at the top is over," Dante sneered. "You're losing your grip, Moretti. You fabricated this entire drama to execute Vanessa Bellini because she knew too much about your illegal offshore diversions!"

"Is that your official claim, Dante?" Alessandro asked softly.

"It is," Dante declared, slamming his hand onto the table. "And as senior member of this council, I move that Alessandro Moretti be stripped of his chairmanship immediately for mental instability and treason against the five families!"

Silence fell over the room. The other bosses looked at each other nervously, waiting to see which way the wind would blow.

Elena stepped forward smoothly, placing her leather briefcase onto the mahogany table with a loud, authoritative snap.

"My name is Dr. Elena Vance," she announced, her loud, clear voice commanding the attention of every hardened criminal in the room. "Former Chief Pediatric Resident at St. Jude’s Hospital."

Dante’s eyes narrowed slightly as he glared at her. "Keep your servant quiet, Moretti."

"Shut your mouth and listen, Donati," Alessandro snapped, his voice dropping into a lethal register.

Elena opened the briefcase and pulled out a series of stamped legal and medical documents.

"These are the original blood analysis reports taken from the infant born to Isabella Moretti on the night of her death," Elena said, sliding copies to every boss at the table. "Alongside them are the certified genomic comparison results performed six hours ago by the Chief of Forensics at Columbia University Hospital."

The bosses picked up the papers, scanning them with wide eyes.

"The DNA match between Emma Vance and Alessandro Moretti is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent," Elena declared, looking directly at Dante. "She is his biological daughter. She is the true Moretti heir. And these bank statements behind her file prove that Dante Donati transferred twelve million dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered to Vanessa Bellini three days before Isabella died."

Gasps erupted around the table. The other bosses turned their heads slowly to glare at Dante Donati.

Dante’s face turned crimson. The cigar slipped from his fingers, falling onto the polished wood table.

"You... you bitch," Dante snarled, reaching into his suit jacket.

CLACK.

Before Dante’s hand could even clear his lapel, Alessandro pulled his silver pistol and fired twice.

The deafening gunshots shattered the glass chandelier overhead. Dante Donati slumped back into his leather chair, two red spots blossoming across his chest, his eyes wide in sudden, permanent shock.

Panicked shouts echoed through the room. The other bosses scrambled back from the table, their personal bodyguards reaching for their weapons.

Alessandro lowered his gun, his arm perfectly steady, staring around the room at the remaining crime lords with absolute dominance.

"Dante Donati tried to murder my wife, stole my child, and attempted a coup against this council," Alessandro said calmly, as smoke curled lazily from the barrel of his gun. "His execution is complete. His assets in New York are now property of the Moretti family."

He turned his dark, intense gaze toward the frightened bosses.

"Does anyone else on this council wish to question my daughter’s bloodline?"

No one spoke. No one moved. One by one, the four remaining bosses lowered their heads in absolute submission to the undisputed king of the city.

Alessandro turned to Elena, offering her his arm.

"Let’s go home to our daughter, Elena," he whispered softly.
