Chapter 4 - The Shadows Gather

By noon the following day, the Moretti estate resembled a military fortress.

Black armored SUVs were parked along the perimeter drive, and dozens of tactical enforcers dressed in dark suits patrolled the manicured gardens.

Inside the house, however, a very different scene was unfolding.

Elena sat at a long marble dining table in the sunlit breakfast parlor, watching Emma happily devour a stack of blueberry pancakes prepared by the estate's executive chef. Sitting at the head of the table was Alessandro, holding a black porcelain coffee cup in one hand and a tablet displaying security feeds in the other.

Every few seconds, Alessandro’s eyes would drift away from the screen to look at Emma, a faint, uncharacteristic softness resting on his harsh features.

"More syrup, please!" Emma chirped, holding up her small plate.

Before the butler could step forward, Alessandro stood up, picked up the silver syrup dispenser, and carefully poured a small golden pool over her pancakes.

"Thank you, Mr. Alessandro," Emma said politely, wiping her sticky mouth with a cloth napkin.

Alessandro paused, his hand resting on the table. "You don't have to call me Mr. Alessandro, sweetheart."

Emma tilted her head, her bright blue eyes full of curiosity. "What should I call you?"

Alessandro looked at Elena nervously, as if asking for permission. Elena swallowed her coffee, feeling a complex mix of emotions stirring in her chest. She had spent three years preparing herself for this day, telling herself she would hate the man who claimed her child. But watching Alessandro look at Emma with such raw, vulnerable devotion was eroding her defenses line by line.

"You can call him Daddy if you want, Emma," Elena said quietly.

Alessandro’s chest expanded as he took a deep breath. He looked down at Emma, waiting for her reaction.

Emma processed the word, then smiled brightly. "Okay, Daddy! Can I go see the big fish in the fountain outside?"

"Of course," Alessandro said, his voice thick with emotion. He signaled to two female security officers standing discreetly near the glass doors. "Keep her within the courtyard walls. Don't let her out of your sight for a single second."

As Emma skipped out into the sunlight accompanied by the guards, the atmosphere in the parlor instantly returned to ice.

Alessandro sat back down, his relaxed posture evaporating. He slid a folder across the table toward Elena.

"What is this?" Elena asked, opening it.

Inside were financial records, phone logs, and wire transfers dating back four years.

"While you were sleeping, my security team interrogated Vanessa in the basement," Alessandro said coldly. "She didn't hold out long. She was terrified."

"Who financed her?" Elena asked, leaning in.

"A man named Dante Donati," Alessandro replied, his jaw tightening. "The boss of the Donati syndicate in Brooklyn. Officially, he’s my most powerful ally and a senior member of the Five Families Council. Unofficially, he’s been trying to dismantle my empire from within for a decade."

Elena scanned the wire transfers. "Dante paid the hospital chief to fake Isabella’s death records. He supplied Vanessa with the offshore accounts and promised to back her fake pregnancy when she presented her 'heir' to the syndicate council."

"Dante knew that if I died without a legitimate heir, the Moretti empire would split into warring factions," Alessandro explained. "He planned to use Vanessa's fake child as a puppet ruler while he took control of our shipping ports, distribution networks, and political contacts."

"And now that Emma is revealed..." Elena murmured, horror dawning on her face.

"Now Dante knows his entire ten-year plot has failed," Alessandro said, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "He knows I have my true bloodline back. He’s cornered, Elena. And a cornered rat like Dante Donati will strike with everything he has."

Right on cue, the double doors of the parlor burst open.

Marco, Alessandro’s right-hand lieutenant, rushed into the room, his face pale and covered in sweat.

"Boss," Marco reported rapidly. "We have a situation. Dante Donati has called an emergency session of the Syndicate High Council at the Grand Hotel in Manhattan for eight o'clock tonight."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. "On what grounds?"

"He claims you’ve lost your mind," Marco said nervously. "He’s telling the council that you faked the discovery of a long-lost daughter to avoid handing over the syndicate chairmanship, and that you're holding Vanessa Bellini hostage under false pretenses. He’s demanding you bring the child to the High Council tonight to face a formal blood-lineage audit... or face total war with the four other families."

Elena slammed her hand onto the table, standing up instantly. "No! Absolutely not! I am not letting you bring a three-year-old child into a room full of mobsters!"

Alessandro stood up slowly, looking at Marco, then turning his gaze to Elena.

"She won't be brought into danger," Alessandro declared softly. "Because tonight, I am not going to the council meeting to negotiate."

He reached into his jacket, pulled out a custom silver-plated pistol engraved with the Moretti coat of arms, and checked the chamber with a sharp, metallic click.

"Tonight," Alessandro said, "I am going to eliminate the Donati family once and for all."
