Chapter 5 - Betrayal in the Safehouse

A week later, security intelligence indicated a potential threat rising in the city, prompt Gabriel to move Emma and the triplets to the Moretti family’s heavily fortified summer compound in upstate New York.

Nestled deep in the woods near Lake Placid, the stone manor was equipped with bulletproof glass, panic rooms, and a twelve-man private security team led by Gabriel’s most trusted captain, Marco.

Gabriel had to remain in Manhattan to coordinate with his lieutenants, leaving Emma in charge of the boys at the estate.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while the boys were playing hide-and-seek in the third-floor playroom, a sudden explosion rocked the south gate of the compound.

BOOM!

The lights flickered and died, emergency red backup generators kicking on instantly. Alarm sirens blared through the hallway.

Emma’s heart leaped into her throat. "Boys! Come here now!"

Leo, Toby, and Julian ran to her, terror in their wide eyes. "Emma! What was that?!"

Outside, gunfire erupted—heavy, automatic rounds echoing through the trees.

Marco ran into the hallway, his tactical vest on, holding an assault rifle. "Mrs. Moretti! The perimeter has been breached! Hostiles inside the gate! We need to get you to the subterranean panic room now!"

"How did they bypass the thermal motion sensors?" Emma demanded, gathering the three boys into her arms.

"Someone gave them the override codes from the inside," Marco growled, his face dark. "Move! Now!"

Emma ushered the triplets down the back service staircase as heavy boots slammed into the front foyer below. Shouts and glass breaking echoed from the floor beneath them.

As they reached the basement level, a masked mercenary carrying a silenced submachine gun rounded the corner.

"Got them!" the gunman yelled into his radio, raising his weapon.

Without thinking, Marco tackled the man through a wooden door, gunfire bursting in the narrow corridor.

"Emma! Run!" Marco shouted from the floor.

Emma didn't hesitate. She grabbed Leo and Toby by the hands, while holding Julian against her hip, sprinting down the narrow concrete hallway toward the heavy steel blast door of the panic room.

Another gunman appeared at the end of the hall.

Emma shoved the three boys into a laundry chute access closet, locking the bolt from the inside, standing in front of the door with a heavy iron fire extinguisher in her hands.

The door burst open. The mercenary stepped inside, raising his weapon.

Emma screamed, swinging the heavy iron extinguisher with all her strength, striking the man square in the side of his tactical helmet. The man stumbled back, his gun firing wildly into the ceiling.

Before he could recover, a dark shadow stepped up behind him.

A silver blade flashed in the dim red light. The mercenary collapsed to the floor.

Gabriel stood in the doorway, breathing heavily, his suit torn, blood splattered across his hands and face. He looked past the fallen guard to see Emma standing defensively in front of the closet, her face pale, holding the fire extinguisher like a shield.

"Gabriel..." she sobbed, dropping the heavy weapon.

Gabriel rushed forward, pulling her into a fierce, desperate embrace. "Emma... my God, Emma."

The closet door creaked open, and three small heads popped out. "Daddy!"

Gabriel dropped to his knees, pulling all three boys and Emma into his arms, kissing their heads repeatedly as tears streamed down his dirt-stained face.
