Chapter 8 - The Truth About Elena

Two hours later, Emma and Marco successfully entered the Greenwich estate through a disused underground drainage tunnel that connected to the carriage house.
While Marco kept watch at the perimeter, Emma descended into the sub-basement vault behind the wine cellar. Using the biometric code Gabriel had given her, she opened the heavy steel door.
Inside sat a wall of safety deposit boxes. Emma unlocked Box 409, retrieving the black titanium encryption drive containing the Moretti reserve keys.
Beside the drive lay a sealed white envelope marked in elegant handwriting: For Gabriel, if the worst should happen. - Elena.
Emma’s breath caught in her throat. It was a letter from Gabriel’s late wife, written days before her death.
Emma safely tucked the drive and the letter into her coat, making her way back through the secret passage to the waiting van.
An hour later, back at the Manhattan headquarters safe house, Emma handed the encryption drive and the letter to Gabriel.
Gabriel stared at his late wife's handwriting, his fingers trembling slightly as he broke the wax seal.
He sat by the window, reading the letter aloud in a soft, emotional voice while Emma listened quietly beside him.
“My dearest Gabriel,
If you are reading this, it means Victor Rossi has finally moved against us. I discovered today that he has been leaking our shipping routes to Lorenzo Falcone. I know he suspects that I know. If something happens to me, do not let grief consume you, my love. Protect our boys. Rebuild our home. And know that my last thought was of you and the beautiful life we shared.”
Tears tracked down Gabriel’s cheeks. For three years, he had carried the crushing weight of guilt, believing he had failed to protect his wife. Now, reading her final words, the dark, suffocating shroud of past trauma finally lifted from his soul.
Elena had not wanted him to live as a grieving ghost. She wanted him to love again, to live fully, and to protect their children.
Gabriel looked up at Emma, who was wiping a tear from her own eye.

He stood up, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her deeply, pouring all the love, gratitude, and future hope in his heart into the embrace.
"Thank you, Emma," he whispered against her lips. "For bringing me back to life."
