Chapter 5 - The War for Red Hook

The battle for control of the Moretti empire didn't take place in the shadows; it erupted across the city over the next seventy-two hours.

Marco Moretti had underestimated his cousin. He had assumed that Alessandro’s brief moment of vulnerability—falling asleep on the sofa, distracted by a maid and a toddler—was a sign of softness. He had assumed wrong.

While Vincent whisked Sophia and Emma away to a heavily guarded compound in upstate New York, Alessandro initiated a complete purge of the family’s operations.

From the docks of Red Hook to the high-rise office buildings of Wall Street, Alessandro’s loyal lieutenants moved with terrifying speed. The listening device Marco had planted in the study was uncovered—it was a sophisticated transmitter fed directly to a crooked FBI agent who had been taking bribes from Marco to dismantle Alessandro’s inner circle.

In a quiet safe house overlooking the Hudson River, Sophia sat near a crackling fireplace, watching Emma draw on a fresh stack of paper. The compound was surrounded by twenty foot steel gates and guarded by armed men who moved like ghosts through the pine trees, but inside, it was warm and quiet.

The door opened, and Alessandro stepped inside.

He looked haggard. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his left arm was wrapped in a crisp white bandage beneath his suit jacket, but his presence was as commanding as ever.

Emma immediately stopped coloring. She looked at Alessandro, then down at his arm.

"Did you fall down?" she asked, walking over to him without an ounce of fear.

Alessandro looked down at the little girl. The cold, ruthless expression that had settled on his face over three days of violent conflict melted away instantly. He slowly sank into a plush armchair and held out his uninjured right hand.

"Something like that, little one," Alessandro said softly. "I had a disagreement with a bad dog."

Emma reached into her small coat pocket and pulled out a bright pink plastic bandage decorated with cartoon sparkles—a prize from her last visit to the pediatrician.

"Here," Emma said, pressing the bandage firmly against Alessandro’s pristine black suit sleeve. "Mama says pink band-aids fix everything fast."

Alessandro stared at the pink sticker on his expensive wool sleeve. A rare, genuine smile touched his lips.

"Thank you, Emma," he said, his voice unusually soft. "I feel better already."

Sophia walked over, handing Alessandro a glass of amber liquid. "Is it over, Mr. Moretti?"

Alessandro took a sip of the bourbon, looking into the dancing flames of the fireplace.

"Marco is in custody," Alessandro said quietly. "The federal agents who were working with him have been exposed. The business is... settled."

He turned his gaze to Sophia.

"You and Emma are safe now. You can return to Queens whenever you like. I have set up a bank account for you. Enough money so you never have to dust another bookshelf for as long as you live. Enough for Emma to go to any college she chooses."

Sophia stared at him, stunned. "Mr. Moretti... I can't accept that. I didn't do anything—"

"You saved my life, Sophia," Alessandro interrupted gently. "If Emma hadn't painted my face, I would have woken up, walked into my study, and let Marco put a bullet in the back of my head. A painting of a blue butterfly saved an empire."

He stood up, looking down at Emma, who had gone back to her crayons on the floor.

"But I have a choice to make," Alessandro continued, his voice dropping into a solemn tone. "And I need your help to make it."
