Chapter 6 - The Don’s Choice

For three generations, the Moretti family had operated in the shadows, controlling shipping lanes, real estate, and political favors through fear and intimidation. Carmine Moretti had built the fortress on Fifth Avenue to keep the world out.
But sitting in the quiet safe house, looking at a toddler’s pink bandage stuck to his suit sleeve, Alessandro realized that the fortress had become a prison.
The following week, Alessandro called an emergency meeting of the Commission—the heads of the five major families of New York—at a neutral location in Long Island.
The room was filled with old men in expensive suits, men whose names were whispered in hushed tones across the city. They expected a bloody war following the arrest of Marco Moretti. They expected Alessandro to demand vengeance.
Instead, Alessandro walked into the room carrying a leather briefcase.
He sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking around at the men who had been his father’s allies and enemies for half a century.
"Gentlemen," Alessandro began, his voice commanding absolute silence in the room. "The world has changed. The old ways of doing things—violence, bribery, blood in the streets—are dead. The feds are smarter, the technology is better, and the cost of this life is too high."
"What are you saying, Alessandro?" growled Don Sal Lucato, the head of the Brooklyn family. "You soft? Because your cousin tried to take your throne?"
Alessandro opened the briefcase. He didn't pull out a gun or a ledger. He pulled out legal documents—deeds, corporate transfers, and clean restructuring papers prepared by the top defense attorneys in the country.
"I am liquidating the Moretti family's illegal assets," Alessandro announced calmly. "The shipping lanes at Red Hook are being turned over to a legitimate union conglomerate. The real estate holdings are being converted into legal, tax-paying commercial trusts. I am stepping down as Don."
Gasps echoed around the table.
"You can't just walk away!" Lucato spat, standing up. "Nobody walks away from the Commission!"
Alessandro stood up as well. He didn't reach for a weapon, but the cold intensity in his dark eyes made the older man freeze in his tracks.
"I am not walking away weak, Sal," Alessandro said softly. "I am walking away clean. Every piece of evidence Marco gave to the FBI has been redirected. If anyone in this room tries to cross into Moretti territory, the legal authorities will have full access to fifty years of records. I have built an iron vault around my family’s legal transition. Try to break it, and you will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."
He closed the briefcase with a sharp snap.
"The Moretti empire is no longer a crime syndicate. It is a legitimate enterprise. And if any of you have an issue with that... you know where to find me."

Alessandro walked out of the room, leaving the most powerful men in New York in dumbfounded silence.
For the first time in his life, he felt as though he could breathe.
