Chapter 7 - A New Canvas

Six months later.

The six-story limestone townhouse on Fifth Avenue no longer smelled of old dust and bad news.

The dark, oppressive velvet curtains had been pulled down, letting the brilliant gold morning sunlight flood through the floor-to-ceiling bulletproof windows. The antique weapons display in the grand hall had been replaced by vibrant, colorful oil paintings purchased from emerging artists across the country.

And in the center of the grand living room, where Alessandro had once fallen asleep from pure physical exhaustion, sat a large wooden easel.

Sophia stood near the kitchen archway, wearing a simple white linen dress, watching Emma paint. Emma was four now, taller, her pigtails tied with bright yellow ribbons.

"Look, Mr. Alex!" Emma cheered, pointing her paintbrush toward the large canvas.

Alessandro stepped out of his private office. He was no longer wearing the rigid, dark suits of a mob boss. He wore an unbuttoned white shirt, comfortable trousers, and a relaxed smile that no longer felt foreign on his face.

He walked over to the easel and looked at Emma’s latest masterpiece. It was a large painting of a big, bright yellow house surrounded by green trees, with three figures standing in the yard holding hands—a tall man, a woman, and a little girl in a yellow raincoat.

"It’s beautiful, Emma," Alessandro said softly, kneeling beside her. "Where is this house?"

"It’s our house," Emma said simply, tapping her brush against his nose, leaving a tiny dot of yellow paint on his skin. "Up where the trees are."

Alessandro didn't wipe the paint away. He looked up at Sophia, who was smiling gently from the doorway.

Over the past six months, the townhouse had transformed. Sophia had stopped working as a housekeeper; instead, with Alessandro’s encouragement, she had enrolled in an interior design program at New York University. The fortress had become a home—a place filled with laughter, music, and the constant smell of fresh flowers.

"Vincent," Alessandro called out as the old consigliere walked into the room carrying a stack of mail.

"Yes, Don Alessandro—apologies, Mr. Moretti," Vincent corrected himself with a slight smile.

"Has the paperwork for the estate in Vermont cleared?"

"Fully executed this morning, sir," Vincent replied, handing him a folder. "The farm is officially yours. Ten acres of forest, a private lake, and plenty of space for a little girl to run around without twenty security guards following her."

Sophia walked over, her eyes wide. "Vermont? Alessandro... you’re really moving out of the city?"

Alessandro took Sophia’s hand in his, his thumbs softly tracing her knuckles.

"This city gave me my past, Sophia," Alessandro said, looking into her warm brown eyes. "But you and Emma gave me a future. I don't want to live in a fortress anymore. I want to live in a house where the doors don't need double locks, and where the only color on my face comes from a little girl’s paintbrush."

Sophia felt a tear slip down her cheek, but for the first time in her life, it was a tear of pure joy.

"Are you sure?" she whispered.

"I’ve never been surer of anything in my life," Alessandro murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her forehead.
