Chapter 9 - The Final Showdown

The rain poured in torrents over Fifth Avenue as night fell. The townhouse was dark, save for a single light burning in the ground-floor study.
Alessandro sat behind his massive mahogany desk, sipping a cup of cold espresso. He was unarmed. No tactical gear, no heavy weapons. Just a man sitting in an empty house.
At 2:00 AM, the heavy wooden doors of the front entrance were forced open with a sharp, metallic crunch.
Slow, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer—the same marble where Emma had once dropped her paintbrush, where Sophia had spilled Earl Grey tea.
Marco Moretti stepped into the light of the study. He looked haggard, his clothes filthy, his eyes bloodshot with rage and madness. In his right hand, he held a dark 9mm pistol.
"Look at you," Marco sneered, his voice raspy and shaking with adrenaline. "The great Alessandro Moretti. Sitting in the dark like a dog waiting to be put down."
Alessandro didn't flinch. He didn't move a muscle. He simply raised his eyes to meet his cousin’s wild gaze.
"You look tired, Marco," Alessandro said quietly.
"I’m tired of playing second best to you!" Marco screamed, pointing the gun directly at Alessandro’s chest. "Carmine always favored you. The family gave you everything! And what did you do with it? You gave it away to legal hacks, to union bosses, to a damn maid!"
"I gave it away because it was poison, Marco," Alessandro said, his voice ringing with a calm, terrifying authority. "It killed my father. It turned you into a monster. And if you pull that trigger, it will destroy whatever soul you have left."
Marco’s finger tightened on the trigger, his hand trembling violently. "Where are they? Where is the girl? I’m going to make sure no one remembers the Moretti name!"
"They’re gone, Marco," Alessandro said softly. "They are somewhere you will never reach."
"Then you’ll die for them!" Marco roared, raising the weapon.
BANG.
A gunshot shattered the quiet room.
Marco froze. His eyes widened in shock. He looked down at his own chest, where a small red stain began to bloom across his dark jacket.
Behind Marco, standing in the shadowed doorway of the study, was Vincent Romano. In his hands, the old consigliere held a smoking revolver.
Marco staggered backward, his gun slipping from his paralyzed fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. He collapsed onto his knees, looking up at Alessandro with utter disbelief before slumping forward onto the rug.
Silence reclaimed the house.
Vincent slowly lowered the revolver, his hands shaking slightly as he blew out a heavy breath.
"Is it over, Don Alessandro?" Vincent asked softly.
Alessandro slowly stood up from behind his desk. He walked past the fallen body of his cousin, stepping out into the grand foyer. He looked around at the towering marble walls, the high ceilings, the shadows that had haunted him his entire life.

"Yes, Vincent," Alessandro said, pulling his coat from the rack near the door. "It’s over."
He walked out the front doors into the cool, cleansing rain, leaving the fortress behind forever.
