Chapter 8 - The Shadows Strike Back

The transition to a clean, legitimate life was not without its final, desperate hurdles.

Two weeks before the planned move to Vermont, as the townhouse was being packed into crates, a ghost from the past made one last attempt to tear down the new life Alessandro was building.

Marco Moretti, using the vast network of dirty cops and corrupt officials he had cultivated before his arrest, managed to escape custody during a transport transfer to a federal prison in upstate New York.

The news broke on a stormy Tuesday evening.

Alessandro sat in his study, staring at the muted television screen as Marco’s mugshot flashed across the news channel. Beside him, Vincent stood with his hands folded behind his back, his face grim.

"He’s desperate, Alessandro," Vincent said quietly. "He knows he has nowhere to run. The Commission won't hide him—they view him as a rat. The feds are hunting him. He has nothing left to lose."

"He’ll come here," Alessandro said, his tone flat, devoid of fear, filled only with a dark resolve. "He thinks if he can eliminate me, he can reclaim the family assets."

"I’ve doubled the perimeter security," Vincent assured him. "The guards are on high alert."

"No," Alessandro said, standing up. "I don't want a shootout in this house. Not around Sophia. Not around Emma. Pack their things tonight. Send them to the airfield. The private jet will take them to Vermont immediately."

"And you?" Sophia’s voice cut through the room. She stood in the doorway, her arms wrapped tightly around herself, her face pale with terror. She had heard everything.

Alessandro walked over to her, taking her hands. "I have to finish this, Sophia. If I leave now, Marco will hunt us forever. I need to close the book on the Moretti name once and for all."

"No!" Sophia cried, tears streaming down her face. "You promised! You promised no more violence! We were supposed to leave together!"

"I am protecting our family, Sophia," Alessandro whispered fiercely, holding her close, pressing his face into her hair. "I swear to you on my life... I will come to Vermont. I will be on that farm before the week is over."

"Promise me," Sophia sobbed, clutching his shirt. "Promise me you won't turn back into the man you used to be."

Alessandro pulled back, looking down at her with intense devotion.

"That man died the day your daughter painted a butterfly on my forehead," he said softly. "I’m just a man who wants to go home."
