Chapter 11 - THE ECHO OF THE OLD COUNCIL

The peaceful sanctuary at the Vale estate had been hard-won, but peace, as Dominic Vale knew better than anyone, was a fragile glass structure in a world built on iron.

Two weeks after the summer celebration on the terrace, Dominic sat in his glass-walled office overlooking Lake Michigan. The sun was dipping below the horizon, bathing the room in deep crimson and amber light. Beside his leather chair stood Julian, his former head of security who was now the director of operations for the Carter-Vale Reconstruction Project.

"Are you sure about this, Julian?" Dominic asked, his sharp gray eyes scanning a stack of financial audit reports on his desk.

"Every word of it, Dominic," Julian replied gravely, leaning against the edge of the mahogany table. "When you dismantled the old Vale Syndicate board last year, three of the senior shell corporations in Geneva were left untouched because they were legally registered under third-party holding companies. Someone just bought out forty percent of those shares."

Dominic rubbed his jaw, his thumb tracing the faint scar near his chin. "Who bought them?"

"A consortium called Apex Legacy Group. On paper, it's a real estate development firm. In reality, it's controlled by the descendants of the old Chicago Council—the shadow cabal your father used to pay off."

Dominic stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. The lake stretched out before him, vast and calm, but the dark clouds gathering on the northern horizon signaled an incoming storm.

"They don't want the money, Julian," Dominic said, his voice dropping into that cool, analytical tone that had once terrified his enemies. "They want the land. The Carter-Vale Reconstruction Project owns six major city blocks in the West Ward. If Apex acquires those deeds, they can convert our community housing, clinics, and schools back into commercial properties."

"They're attacking Emma's life's work," Julian noted quietly.

At that moment, the office door clicked open. Emma stepped inside carrying a tray with two fresh cups of dark coffee. She wore a simple cream-colored sweater, her dark hair pinned back. Despite the long hours she spent at the foundation, her face radiated warmth and vitality.

"You two look like you're planning a military campaign," Emma said with a gentle smile, setting the coffee down on the desk. She walked up behind Dominic, her hand resting on the small of his back.

Dominic turned, putting his arm around her waist and pulling her close, resting his chin on her crown. "Just routine corporate politics, sweetheart."

Emma looked up into his gray eyes, her dark gaze piercing right through his calm facade. "Dominic. I know that look. That's the look you had when you were guarding the gates of this estate with automatic weapons."

Julian cleared his throat discreetly. "I'll leave you two to discuss this. I'm going to run a background check on Apex's board members." He gave a respectful nod to Emma and slipped out of the room.

Emma turned in Dominic's arms, resting her hands against his chest, right over his steady heart. "Talk to me, Dominic. What's happening?"

"The ghosts of my father's past are trying to buy back what we rebuilt," Dominic admitted softly, his thumbs gently caressing her waist. "They want to destroy the foundation, Emma. They think because I laid down my guns, I'm defenseless."

Emma’s eyes flared with a quiet, fierce determination. "You didn't lay down your strength, Dominic. You just redirected it. We built this foundation together, and nobody—no old council, no shell corporation—is taking it away from the people who need it."

May you like

Dominic smiled, leaning down to press his lips against hers. "I love you, Mrs. Vale."

"And I love you," she whispered against his lips. "Now, let's go show them how a real kingdom is defended."
