Chapter 7 - The Vulnerability of Kings

The transformation of Emma Carter from a marginalized maid to the head of the domestic staff was seamless, primarily because her leadership style wasn't built on fear, but on the same unshakeable kindness she had always possessed.
Within three weeks, the house accounts were balanced, the employees were receiving their doubled wages on time, and Sophie—the young maid who had broken the grandmother's vase—was promoted to Emma's old assistant position, her mother's financial situation in Indiana completely secured.
But while the house found its peace, Dominic’s world was descending into chaos.
The Moretti family had formed an alliance with a rogue faction of the Detroit syndicate. They were no longer just stealing trucks; they were targeting Dominic’s inner circle. On a rainy Thursday evening, an explosive device went off at one of Dominic’s legitimate restaurants downtown. No one was killed, but the message was clear: We are coming for the throne.
Dominic spent three days locked in his office, surviving on black coffee and cigarettes, his face growing hollow and his gray eyes turning bloodshot. He didn't leave his desk, mapping out a multi-tiered retaliatory strike that would wipe the Morettis off the Chicago map permanently.
At two in the morning on the fourth night, the door to his office creaked open quietly.
Dominic didn't look up, his hand furiously writing coordinates on a tactical map. "I told you, Mason, I don't want to be disturbed until the strike team is in position."
"It's not Mason, Dominic."
The sound of his first name from her voice made his pen stop. Dominic raised his head, his vision slightly blurry from exhaustion. Emma stood by the desk, holding a silver tray with a bowl of homemade chicken soup, fresh bread, and a cup of herbal tea. She had bypassed his security guards simply because no one had the heart to stop her.
"You need to eat," she said softly, setting the tray down over his tactical maps, completely ignoring the dangerous military intelligence beneath the porcelain. "And you need to breathe."
Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, letting out a long, ragged sigh that sounded entirely broken. He rubbed his face with his hands. "I don't have time to breathe, Emma. If I stop moving for five minutes, my family’s empire collapses. Men die."
Emma didn't back away. She walked around the desk, stopping right beside his chair. With a bravery that left him paralyzed, she reached out and placed her warm, soft hand over his aching shoulder, her fingers gently kneading the tight, knotted muscles at the base of his neck.
"An empire built on blood is always trying to fall, Dominic," she whispered, her voice a soothing balm to his frantic mind. "But you are not your father. You don't have to carry the war alone. Eat the soup. Let the world fight outside for one hour."
The touch of her hand sent a powerful shockwave of warmth through his entire body. For thirty-eight years, Dominic Vale had been treated as a king, a monster, or a target. No one had ever touched him just to offer him comfort. No one had ever looked at him and seen a man who was simply tired.
He reached up, his large, scarred hand closing over her smaller, softer fingers, pressing her palm tighter against his neck. He closed his eyes, a single tear of pure relief slipping down his cheek in the dark room.

"Stay with me, Emma," he murmured, his voice cracking with a vulnerability he had never shown to another human soul. "Just for an hour. Don't let the shadows back in."
"I'm here," she whispered, her other hand coming down to rest on his forehead. "I'm not going anywhere."
