Chapter 19 - THE HEALING TIDE

Three months later.
The autumn leaves had turned to brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold across the grounds of the Vale estate. The air was crisp, clean, and filled with the fresh scent of woodsmoke and Lake Michigan's breeze.
The Apex scandal had completely collapsed the old council network. With Sebastian Vance and his associates facing federal prison sentences, the court officially transferred all of Apex's seized assets and property deeds directly to the Carter-Vale Reconstruction Project.
The rebuilt East District Community Center had reopened, bigger and safer than before, dedicated in honor of the city's emergency responders.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, Dominic stood on the stone terrace of his estate, wearing a dark gray sweater and trousers. In his hand was a mug of hot coffee. His face was completely relaxed, the scars on his temple healed into faint, honorable lines.
The heavy iron gates of the estate remained wide open, welcoming local families who were visiting the estate's public gardens for the autumn festival.
Soft footsteps sounded on the stone terrace behind him.
Emma walked out into the crisp afternoon air, wrapped in a cozy wool shawl. Her face radiated an inner glow that was even brighter than the autumn sun.
Dominic turned, taking her into his arms, wrapping his sweater around her shawl to keep her warm against his chest. He kissed the top of her head.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" Emma asked, looking up into his clear gray eyes.
"I was thinking about how quiet it is," Dominic smiled gently, his hand stroking her dark hair. "No threats, no bodyguards, no dark ledgers. Just you and me."
Emma smiled, a tender, emotional tear glistening in her dark eyes. She took his large, calloused right hand and placed it gently against her lower abdomen.
Dominic paused, feeling the subtle warmth beneath her sweater. He looked down at his hand, then looked back up into her eyes, his heart stopping for a heartbeat before pounding wildly against his ribs.
"Emma..." he whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "Are you...?"
"Four months," Emma whispered back, her smile breaking into a joyful laugh. "Our baby is healthy, strong, and growing every day."
Dominic, the man who had faced armies without flinching, felt his knees go weak. Tears welled up in his sharp gray eyes as he dropped to one knee in front of her, pressing his face against her belly, holding her tightly as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe.

"Thank you," Dominic choked out, his voice rich with overwhelming love. "Thank you for giving me a family... for giving me a life."
Emma ran her fingers through his dark hair, looking down at her husband with complete, unshakeable devotion. "You built this life, Dominic. With your own two hands."
