Chapter 14 - A FRACTURED SANCTUARY

The confrontation at the gala escalated the conflict into open warfare, but Sebastian Vance quickly realized he couldn't beat Dominic in a boardroom or an alley. So, he targeted the heart of the Carter-Vale Reconstruction Project: its public trust.

Three days after the gala, a fire broke out at the newly renovated Carter-Vale Community Center in the East District.

It was eight o'clock in the evening when the alarm sounded. Dominic and Emma were at the estate reviewing architectural plans when Julian burst into the room.

"Dominic! The East District center is on fire!" Julian shouted. "Emma, the evening literacy class was still inside!"

Emma dropped her blueprints, her heart stopping. "The children!"

Without a second thought, Dominic grabbed his coat and keys. "Julian, call our private security team and dispatch emergency medical units immediately! Let's go!"

The drive to the East District was a blur of roaring engine sound and flashing lights. When they arrived, thick black smoke was billowing into the night sky from the second floor of the brick building. Fire trucks were already on the scene, spraying high-pressure water streams, while frightened parents and children huddled across the street.

"Emma! Stay in the car!" Dominic ordered, slamming the truck into park.

"No! I know the layout of the second-floor classrooms!" Emma cried out, unbuckling her seatbelt and jumping out into the cold night air.

Dominic cursed under his breath and ran after her.

At the perimeter, a panicked volunteer teacher ran up to them, tears streaming down her soot-stained face. "Mrs. Vale! Little Tommy is still up on the second floor! He was hiding in the reading nook when the smoke started!"

Emma turned toward the burning entrance, but Dominic grabbed her arm, pulling her back forcefully.

"Dominic, let me go!" she pleaded, her eyes filled with desperate panic.

"No, Emma! You stay here with the medics!" Dominic commanded, his gray eyes burning with fierce, protective love. "I am going in."

Before she could object, Dominic grabbed a wet firefighter's blanket from a nearby truck, wrapped it around his shoulders, and charged straight through the flaming front doors into the burning building.

"Dominic!" Emma screamed, her hand flying to her mouth as she watched the man she loved disappear into the wall of smoke and fire.

Inside, the heat was suffocating. Smoke blinded his eyes, but Dominic moved with terrifying, precise purpose. He ran up the collapsing wooden staircase, kicking open the door to the second-floor reading room.

"Tommy!" Dominic called out, his deep voice cutting through the roar of the flames.

A tiny whimper came from beneath a overturned wooden desk in the corner. Dominic rushed over, lifting the heavy desk with one arm and scooping up the terrified seven-year-old boy. He wrapped the fire blanket securely around the child.

"I've got you, son. Hold on tight," Dominic growled, cradling the boy against his chest.

As he turned to run back toward the stairs, a heavy wooden support beam above them cracked and gave way, crashing down straight toward them.
