Chapter 17 - THE TRAP IN THE HIGH-RISE

An hour later, the steps of the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago were packed with hundreds of reporters, news vans, and citizens.

Dominic stood at the podium in a dark navy suit, looking formidable and pristine despite his injuries. Emma stood right beside him, her hand linked firmly in his.

Dominic spoke clearly into the bank of microphones:

"For decades, the name Vale was associated with fear, shadow, and corruption," Dominic stated, his voice echoing across the plaza. "When I married my wife, Emma, I vowed to leave that dark legacy behind and use our resources to rebuild this city. But today, I am presenting evidence to the United States Attorney showing that Apex Legacy Group—led by Sebastian Vance—has been using corporate extortion, arson, and financial fraud to undermine our communities."

Dominic held up the steel drive. "This drive contains thirty years of illegal financial transactions. I am surrendering it fully to federal authorities."

As the crowd erupted into questions and camera flashes, Julian whispered into Dominic's ear: "Dominic, Sebastian Vance's jet was grounded on the tarmac by federal marshals. But his right-hand man, a mercenary named Victor, just sent a message. He's holding the city zoning director hostage inside the Apex high-rise downtown. He demands to meet you alone, or he executes the hostage."

Emma caught the shift in Dominic's expression immediately. "What is it?"

"Sebastian's mercenaries are desperate," Dominic said quietly to her. "They have a hostage at their headquarters."

Emma didn't panic. She squeezed his hand tightly. "You have to save them, Dominic. But you're not going alone. Take Julian and the federal SWAT team."

Dominic looked into her dark, brave eyes. "I promise I'll come back to you, Emma. Intact."

"You better," she whispered, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "I have a surprise waiting for you at home."

Dominic smiled, his gray eyes flashing with renewed fire. He turned to Julian and Captain Miller of the Chicago PD, who was standing nearby. "Captain, gear up your team. We're breaching the Apex tower."
