Chapter 5 - The War Room

At 9:30 AM the following morning, the financial district of London was shrouded in a thick, gray winter fog.

The glass skyscraper of Sterling Logistics towered eighty stories above the Thames, an iron-and-glass monument to unchecked corporate power. Inside the top-floor executive boardroom, thirty high-ranking board members, international investors, and high-priced attorneys sat around a horseshoe-shaped oak table.

At the head of the table sat Vance Sterling. He was a silver-haired man of fifty-five, wearing a bespoke three-piece Savile Row suit, gold cufflinks, and an expression of supreme, calm confidence.

"Gentlemen," Sterling began, pressing his hands flat against the mahogany surface. "As you are all aware, our managing partner, Mr. Viktor Draven, has been dealing with severe... personal instability over the past week. His erratic behavior and the recent violence surrounding his private interests pose an existential threat to this firm's valuation."

He slid a stack of legal documents across the table. "I am proposing an immediate vote to strip Mr. Draven of his voting shares and transfer executive authority to my office for the protection of the shareholders."

Before the lead attorney could open his mouth to second the motion, the double reinforced glass doors at the back of the boardroom exploded inward!

CRASH!

A pair of private Sterling security guards flew through the air, crashing onto the marble floor of the reception lounge.

Through the thick cloud of dust and shattered glass walked Viktor Draven.

He wore a dark charcoal suit, his coat draped casually over his shoulders, his presence so massive and terrifying that three board members instantly slid back in their leather chairs, pale as sheets.

Behind Viktor walked Marcus, carrying a leather briefcase.

And beside Viktor, stepping onto the plush carpet with slow, measured, predatory grace, was Shadow. The scruffy dog wore a sleek black tactical harness, his pale yellow eyes sweeping across the room until they locked directly onto Vance Sterling.

"Viktor..." Sterling stammered, his polished composure cracking for a fraction of a second before he caught himself. "This is a private board meeting. You can't simply walk in here with armed guards and... an animal!"

"It's a public company, Vance," Viktor said smoothly, pulling out the massive leather chair directly across from Sterling and taking a seat. Shadow sat hard right beside Viktor’s left knee, his tail quiet, his lips twitching slightly. "And as the owner of fifty-one percent of the voting stock, I decide who attends the meeting."

Sterling leaned forward, his knuckles turning white. "You're losing your mind, Draven. You bring a mutt to a ten-billion-pound board meeting?"

"This 'mutt'," Viktor said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made the entire room hold its breath, "has a better sense for trash than anyone in this building."

Viktor nodded to Marcus. Marcus opened the briefcase, pulled out a digital recording device, and pressed play.

A high-definition audio recording echoed through the boardroom's surround-sound speakers.

“The girl and the dog must die before the police identify the bodies in the Southwark vault,” Vance Sterling’s distinct, refined voice filled the air. “I don’t care what it costs. Use the Russian contractors. Clean it up.”

The boardroom went dead silent.

Several investors gasped, looking from the recording device to Vance Sterling in absolute horror. Sterling’s face turned from pale to an ash-gray mask of pure panic.

"That's... that's a fabrication! An AI synthesis!" Sterling shouted, standing up so fast his chair flipped over behind him. "Security! Call the police!"

Shadow stood up instantly.

The dog didn't bark. He let out a single, thunderous, guttural roar that vibrated through the floorboards, stepping forward until his front paws rested on the edge of the mahogany table, his white teeth bare, two inches from Sterling’s face.

Sterling froze, his breath catching in his throat, terrified to make even the slightest movement.

"He recognizes your voice, Vance," Viktor whispered, stepping around the table. "He heard it on the phone down in the dark while my son was tied to a chair."
