Chapter 9 - The Sanctuary

A year after the rescue in the Southwark vaults, the Draven estate underwent a massive transformation.
Realizing that Shadow’s incredible tactical intelligence and protective instincts were not unique among abandoned animals, Viktor bought fifty acres of rolling green countryside in Sussex, founding the SHADOW DRAVEN SANCTUARY FOR RESCUED ANIMALS.
The sanctuary was designed as a world-class rehabilitation facility for abused, abandoned, and street-hardened dogs, pairing them with retired military veterans and children from underprivileged backgrounds.
On the grand opening day, hundreds of guests, local families, and media outlets gathered under bright blue skies on the green hills of Sussex.
At the podium stood ten-year-old Julian Draven and eight-year-old Lily Draven.
Lily stood before the microphone, wearing a yellow summer dress, her voice steady and full of confidence as she spoke to the crowd.
"People thought Shadow was just a stray dog," Lily said, her warm voice floating across the sunny valley. "They thought he was dirty, dangerous, and broken. But he wasn't broken. He was just waiting for someone to see who he really was."
She looked out over the crowd to where Viktor stood beside Marcus, watching his children with undisguised pride.

"My dad taught me that power isn't about scaring people," Lily continued, her eyes shining with joy. "Power is about protecting the people who can't protect themselves. Shadow saved my brother. He saved me. And now, we're going to save thousands more."
The crowd broke into thunderous applause as Shadow trotted up to the podium, his silver tag catching the afternoon sun, letting out a joyful, roaring bark that echoed across the green hills.
