Chapter 8 - The Adoption Hearing

Three months later, the high ceilings of the Royal Courts of Justice were filled with warm spring sunlight filtering through arched stained-glass windows.

Inside Courtroom 4, Judge Margaret Holloway sat behind her elevated oak bench, reviewing a thick stack of legal documents. Across the aisle sat Viktor Draven, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, with Julian and Lily sitting beside him. Lily wore a beautiful navy blue dress, her hair neatly braided, holding Viktor’s hand tightly.

Sitting quietly at their feet, wearing his official silver-tagged leather collar, was Shadow.

"Mr. Draven," Judge Holloway said, her spectacles resting on the tip of her nose as she looked down over her papers. "Your background... is, to put it mildly, exceptionally complex. Your name appears in high-level security dossiers across three continents."

"My past is my own, Your Honor," Viktor said, standing up with calm, absolute dignity. "But my home is secure, my assets are entirely legitimate, and my devotion to these children is absolute."

"The social services report is... quite extraordinary," the judge continued, turning a page. "Dr. Evans notes that in ninety days, Lily's health metrics have normalized completely. Her educational assessments show remarkable progress. And the child herself has expressed an unwavering desire to remain in your custody."

The judge looked down at the seven-year-old girl. "Lily, my dear. Do you understand what it means for Mr. Draven to become your legal father?"

Lily stood up on her chair so her head cleared the wooden railing. She looked at the judge, then looked down at Viktor, who was watching her with unconditional warmth in his eyes.

"It means I don't have to sleep in the dark anymore," Lily said clearly, her voice ringing through the silent courtroom. "It means Julian is my brother. And it means Shadow has a home where nobody hits him with iron chains."

Judge Holloway’s strict expression softened into a warm, gentle smile. She looked at the scruffy dog sitting calmly beside the defense table.

"And what about the canine?" the judge asked with a light twinkle in her eye. "Does he approve of this arrangement?"

Shadow raised his head, looked directly at the judge, and gave two firm, polite barks that echoed off the mahogany paneling of the court.

The entire courtroom broke into light laughter.

Judge Holloway lifted her heavy wooden gavel and brought it down against the sound block with a crisp, decisive BANG!

"The court hereby grants the petition for full legal adoption," Judge Holloway declared. "Lily is officially declared Lily Draven. Court is adjourned."
