Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

With Vance Sterling behind bars and his syndicate network completely dismantled, peace returned to the Draven estate. But for Lily, adjusting to a life of safety and luxury proved to be a complex, overwhelming journey.

For two years, the little girl had lived in survival mode—sleeping under cardboard boxes, dodging violent street thugs, and going days without a warm meal. The massive velvet beds, silver cutlery, and quiet luxury of the Mayfair mansion felt foreign, almost terrifying to her.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, Viktor walked into the estate's sprawling library.

He found Lily sitting on the hardwood floor in the corner behind a massive leather sofa, curled up in a small blanket with Shadow sleeping across her lap. She had avoided the luxurious bed in her room, seeking out the tightest, darkest corner of the house to feel secure.

Viktor walked over slowly, holding two plates of warm apple pie and vanilla ice cream. He didn't order her to get up. Instead, the dreaded mafia boss sat down flat on the hardwood floor beside her, resting his heavy back against the base of the bookshelf.

"The bed too big?" Viktor asked softly, sliding a plate toward her.

Lily nodded quietly, taking a small bite of the pie. "When a room is too big, you can't see who's coming from behind."

Viktor looked at the little girl, feeling a deep, echoing understanding in his own soul. "I felt that way for a long time after my wife died. I built walls, bought armored cars, hired fifty guards... because I thought if the room was strong enough, nothing bad could ever reach inside."

Lily looked up at him, her dark eyes wide. "Did it work?"

"No," Viktor admitted, a soft, rare smile appearing on his face. "It just made the room lonely. Until a little girl and a brave dog knocked on my car window in the rain."

Julian walked into the library, holding a brand-new leather dog collar studded with polished silver tags. He sat down on the floor on Lily’s other side.

"Look what came in the mail, Lily," Julian said excitedly, holding up the collar.

Engraved across the silver plate was a single sentence: SHADOW DRAVEN — GUARDIAN OF MAYFAIR.

Lily traced the letters with her finger, her eyes welling up with big, clear tears. "Draven?" she whispered.

Viktor reached out, resting his large hand over her small one. "A dog like Shadow deserves a family name. And so do you, Lily. If you'll have us."

Lily dropped her spoon, throwing her small arms around Viktor’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder. Shadow let out a happy, sharp bark, turning around to lick Julian’s face until the young boy broke into uncontrollable, joyful laughter that echoed through the vast mahogany library.
