Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the System

For the next seventy-two hours, Penelope's small studio apartment became the war room for the most dangerous tactical operation in Chicago history.

Damiano didn't return to his mansion in Lake Forest. He stayed in Pilsen, sleeping on Penelope’s worn sofa, living off black coffee and takeout, watching in awe as Penelope worked.

Her fingers flew across dual keyboards like a concert pianist executing a chaotic masterpiece. She didn't just trace money; she predicted human behavior through transaction histories.

"Look here," Penelope said at 3:00 AM on the second night, pointing at a monitor.

Damiano leaned over her shoulder, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "What am I looking at?"

"This is Marco’s private account in Panama," Penelope explained. "Every time he orders a hit or pays off a city official, he doesn't use crypto. He’s old school. He buys high-end luxury art pieces through a gallery in Munich, then resells them through a proxy in New York."

"The gallery owner... Stefan Roth," Damiano muttered, recognizing the name. "I thought Stefan was loyal to my father."

"Loyalty in your business has an expiry date, Damiano," Penelope said gently. "Usually when the offshore balance hits eight figures."

Damiano looked down at Penelope. In the pale blue light of the monitors, he saw the sharp, fierce determination in her features. The beauty he had missed behind his shallow prejudices was now undeniably clear—it was the beauty of absolute intelligence, resilience, and unshakeable grace under pressure.

"Why didn't you leave?" Damiano asked suddenly. "Fourteen months ago, with your skills, you could have fled to South America. You could have lived like a queen."

Penelope paused, her fingers resting on the keys. She turned her head slightly to meet his gaze.

"Because my mother spent twenty years telling me I was too heavy to ever accomplish anything great," she said quietly. "My ex-fiancé told me I was lucky he stayed with me because no one else would look at me. And Marco killed Arthur—the only boss who ever judged me by my work instead of my dress size. If I ran away, I would be agreeing with all of them. I don't run."

Damiano’s dark eyes burned with a fierce, protective light. He reached out, his long fingers gently touching the side of her arm—not with arrogance, but with reverence.

"Anyone who ever made you feel small was terrified of how large you truly are," Damiano said, his voice deep and sincere. "You are the most formidable woman I have ever met, Penelope."

Penelope’s heart gave an unexpected flutter. She looked at him, seeing past the mob boss exterior to the man who was learning, for the first time in his life, what real strength looked like.

Before she could answer, her primary monitor began flashing red.

"They found us," Penelope said, her tone snapping back to cool precision. "Marco’s mercenaries just pinged my cell tower connection. We have four minutes."
