Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

The Chicago Harbor Club was a monument to gilded corruption. Crystal chandeliers hung from thirty-foot ceilings, illuminating three hundred guests dressed in tuxedos and silk gowns. Champagne flowed while string quartets played classical music.
At the center of the grand ballroom stood Marco Vance.
Marco was fifty, sleek, with silvering hair and a tailored tuxedo that barely concealed his predatory demeanor. He was holding court with two city commissioners, laughing at a joke, when the ballroom doors opened.
The room didn't fall silent immediately, but a wave of hushed whispers began to ripple from the entrance.
Walking down the grand marble staircase was Damiano Bianchi.
Beside him, arm in arm, was Penelope Brooks.
She wore a custom-tailored emerald green satin gown that hugged her curves with breathtaking elegance. Her dark hair was styled in soft, glamorous waves, and a diamond necklace—a Bianchi family heirloom—rested against her collarbone. She walked with the supreme, quiet confidence of a queen entering her own court.
Marco’s smile froze. His glass of champagne trembled slightly.
"Damiano," Marco stammered as Damiano and Penelope approached him through the crowd. "You're... alive. The news said there was a explosion in Pilsen..."
"Reports of my death were greatly exaggerated, Marco," Damiano said coolly, his voice echoing in the immediate circle. "Allow me to introduce my senior financial officer and strategic partner, Miss Penelope Brooks."
Marco’s eyes darted to Penelope. The blood drained from his face as he recognized the woman from the grocery store—and from the federal intelligence dossiers he had tried to burn.
"You..." Marco whispered.
"Good evening, Marco," Penelope said, her voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I believe you were in the middle of executing a twenty-five-million-dollar wire transfer to the Cayman account Alpha-9? You might want to check your tablet."
Marco frantically pulled his encrypted mobile device from his inner pocket and tapped the screen.
The screen didn't show a bank confirmation.
It showed a live streaming feed of every single ledger, offshore account, hit contract, and recorded phone call Marco had ever made—being uploaded in real-time to the official servers of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

"What did you do?!" Marco hissed, his calm completely shattering.
"I didn't break your security, Marco," Penelope said with a sweet, brilliant smile. "I simply redirected your automated transfer script through my own relay. Every dollar you tried to steal tonight just triggered an automatic federal freeze warrant on your entire network."
