Chapter 9 - The Truth Comes Light

Three months later.
The sunshine streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a brand-new glass skyscraper in downtown Chicago.
The brass plaque on the mahogany door read: BROOKS FINANCIAL FORENSICS & CONSULTING.
Inside, Penelope sat behind an executive oak desk, wearing a stunning tailored burgundy suit. On her wall hung a formal letter of commendation from the Director of the FBI, officially clearing her name of all wrongdoing, restoring her high-level security clearances, and publicly thanking her for dismantling the largest financial corruption ring in Midwest history.
The door to her office opened, and Damiano Bianchi walked in.
He no longer wore the dark, intimidating mob suits of his past. He wore an elegant, warm navy jacket with an open collar. Over the past ninety days, with Penelope’s guidance, Damiano had completely dismantled the Bianchi Syndicate's illegal operations, turning his family’s vast assets into legitimate global logistics, real estate, and charitable foundations.
In his hand, he carried a small white box wrapped in a gold ribbon.
"Signor Bianchi," Penelope said with a warm smile, rising from her desk. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I brought you a gift from Pharaoh's Gourmet Market," Damiano said, placing the box gently on her desk.
Penelope opened it. Inside was a single, exquisite piece of imported Italian dark chocolate—and a small brass register key.

"The key to register four?" Penelope asked, laughing softly.
"The key to the place where I was foolish enough to think I was the most powerful person in the room," Damiano said softly, walking around the desk to stand before her. He took both of her hands in his. "And where I was lucky enough to be proven wrong."
