Chapter 5 - Caught in the Crosshairs

The assault was immediate and brutal.

Before the four minutes were up, heavy automatic gunfire shattered the bakery's ground-floor glass windows, ripping through the ceiling into Penelope's floorboards.

"Down!" Damiano roared, lunging forward and tackling Penelope to the floor, covering her body with his own as wood splinters and drywall rained down upon them like hail.

"I have a secondary escape!" Penelope shouted over the deafening noise of suppressed submachine guns. "The old flour chute in the back pantry!"

Damiano pulled his chrome Sig Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster, firing three precise shots through the doorframe as two masked figures burst into the hallway. The men crumpled to the floor.

"Go! I’m right behind you!" Damiano yelled.

Penelope didn't hesitate. She grabbed her encrypted drive—the master key to Marco’s empire—and slid into the narrow steel flour chute that led down into the deep, dark drainage tunnels beneath the old bakery.

Damiano fired off his remaining magazine, tossed a smoke grenade into the corridor, and dove headfirst down the chute after her.

They tumbled into the cold, damp stone underground of Chicago’s historic freight tunnel network. The air was frigid, smelling of damp earth and rust. Rainwater trickled through the ceiling grates from the street thirty feet above.

"Are you hit?" Damiano grabbed her shoulders, his hands searching frantically in the dim light to check for blood.

"I'm fine," Penelope gasped, her chest heaving. "You?"

"I’m alive," Damiano said. He looked at her, his face inches from hers. His eyes were wide with adrenaline, but his focus was entirely on her safety. "Can you walk?"

"I can run," Penelope said.

They moved quickly through the dark tunnels. Above them, the muffled sounds of sirens began to echo through the city grid. Marco had launched an open war in the middle of Pilsen, which meant he was getting desperate.

"He knows we have the data," Penelope said as they paused near an emergency exit ladder leading to an abandoned railyard near the Chicago River. "He’s going to move the rest of the stolen forty-three million to a non-custodial wallet tonight during the annual Harbor Club Gala."

"The Harbor Club," Damiano spat with deep contempt. "The entire corrupt board will be there. The mayor, the district attorney, Marco..."

"Good," Penelope said, a dangerous smile spreading across her lips. "Then we won't have to hunt them down individually. We'll crash the party."
