Chapter 6 - THE MORNING AFTER THE STORM

The morning sun washed over the Costa estate in rays of brilliant gold, turning the wet pine trees into glittering emeralds.
Inside the nursery, Maya woke up from a light sleep. She was sitting in the velvet armchair beside Leo’s bed, her head resting near the sleeping boy’s hand.
The heavy oak doors clicked open softly.
Maya turned her head instantly.
Damian stood in the doorway. He had showered and changed into a clean dark suit, but his eyes bore the exhaustion of a man who had walked through hell and back.
Maya stood up, her heart hammering against her ribs as she looked at him. She scanned his body for injuries, her medical instincts taking over, breathing a massive sigh of relief when she saw he was unharmed.
"You came back," Maya whispered softly.
Damian walked across the room, stopping inches from her. He looked down at her face—the faint black sutures above her eyebrow, her warm brown eyes filled with genuine concern for him, her soft lips parted in relief.
Without saying a word, Damian reached out, wrapped his long arms around her waist, and pulled her flush against his broad chest.
Maya let out a soft gasp, but she didn't pull away. She wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into the crook of his warm shoulder, inhaling the scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and clean rain.
"I promised you I would," Damian murmured into her hair, his grip tightening as if he were afraid she might vanish into thin air. "It's over, Maya. The men who hurt Leo... they will never hurt anyone again."
Maya pulled back slightly, looking up into his dark eyes. "Is Leo truly safe now?"
"He is safe. You are safe," Damian promised, his hand rising to gently trace her cheekbone. "My house is secure."
Suddenly, Leo stirred on the bed, rubbing his small eyes and yawning loudly.
"Daddy...?" Leo mumbled, sitting up and looking at them. A huge, toothy grin spread across his face when he saw his father hugging Maya. "Are you hugging Maya because she's our new mommy?"
Maya’s face turned bright crimson, and she tried to step back, but Damian held her firmly by the waist, looking down at his son with a warm, rumbling laugh that shook his chest.
"Leo," Damian said, turning his head to look at Maya with breathtaking tenderness, "Maya is very special. We have to ask her if she wants to stay with us forever first."
Leo sat up straight, clapping his small hands together. "Please stay, Maya! We have a big house, and Daddy has lots of ice cream, and I'll share my dinosaur toys with you!"
Maya looked from the sweet, innocent boy on the bed to the powerful, dangerous man holding her waist. For three long years, she had believed her life was over—that she was condemned to walk through the shadows alone forever.
But standing in this room, surrounded by the warmth of this father and son, she knew her broken heart had finally found its home.

"I would love to stay, Leo," Maya whispered, tears of joy spilling over her eyelashes. "I would love to stay."
Damian leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a soft, gentle, deeply passionate kiss that sealed their unspoken promise beneath the morning sun.
