Chapter 7 - THE GHOSTS OF THE PAST

Three months later.

Winter had arrived on Long Island, coating the sprawling estate in a thick, pristine blanket of white snow.

The mansion was filled with the warm, rich scent of roasting turkey, pine needles, and fresh cinnamon. Christmas decorations adorned the grand marble staircase, and a massive fifteen-foot fir tree stood in the central hall, covered in glittering gold and silver ornaments.

Maya stood near the glass doors of the sunroom, wearing a cozy cream-colored cashmere sweater and navy trousers. Her forehead wound had healed into a tiny, almost invisible silver line above her eyebrow.

She was staring out at the snow-covered lawn, holding a small silver photo frame.

Inside the frame was a photograph of a little girl with bright blonde curls and laughing blue eyes—her daughter, Lily.

A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped around Maya’s waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, familiar chest. Damian rested his jaw against her shoulder, pressing a soft kiss to her neck.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Damian asked softly.

"I was thinking about Lily," Maya admitted, turning slightly in his arms to look at him. "Every Christmas, she used to insist on putting the star on top of the tree herself."

Damian looked down at the photograph of the little girl, his dark eyes filled with profound respect and gentleness.

"She was beautiful, Maya," Damian said softly. "She had your bright spirit."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite mahogany box, handing it to Maya.

"What is this?" Maya asked, blinking in surprise.

"Open it," Damian smiled.

Maya opened the box. Resting on velvet was a beautifully crafted silver ornament in the shape of an angel holding a small lily flower, with the name Lily engraved in elegant script across the wings.

Tears rushed to Maya’s eyes, and she looked up at Damian in absolute wonder.

"I had my jewelers make it," Damian said gently, wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "So Lily will always have her place on our family tree."

Maya sobbed softly, throwing her arms around Damian’s neck, kissing him with all the fierce, overwhelming love she possessed. "Thank you, Damian... thank you..."

"No," Damian whispered against her lips. "Thank you for bringing light back into this house."

From the central hall, Leo’s excited voice echoed through the house.

"Maya! Daddy! Come look! Uncle Luca brought a giant present!"

Damian laughed, taking Maya’s hand and weaving his fingers tightly with hers. "Come on. Let's go celebrate."
