Chapter 9 - THE VOWS UPON THE CLIFF

Six months later. Autumn returned.
The ocean cliffs behind the Costa mansion were transformed into a fairy-tale garden of white roses, glowing lanterns, and soft string quartet music.
The sky was a brilliant shade of purple and gold as the sun dipped below the Pacific horizon.
Gathered on the lawn were two hundred guests—not just syndicate allies and business partners, but doctors, nurses, household staff, and friends from across the city.
Standing at the altar near the edge of the cliff was Don Damian Costa. He wore a sharp black velvet tuxedo, his dark hair styled back, his dark eyes fixed on the long white carpet leading down the aisle.
Beside him stood six-year-old Leo, looking handsome in his matching miniature tuxedo, holding a velvet ring pillow.
The string quartet switched to a breathtaking rendition of Canon in D.
Every guest stood up.
Walking down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Mercer was Maya.
She wore a breathtaking ivory lace wedding gown that trailed behind her like liquid sea foam. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves adorned with small white lilies, and her eyes shone with a brilliant, unshakeable light.
When Dr. Mercer placed her hand in Damian’s, the powerful Don bowed his head, pressing a reverence-filled kiss to her knuckles.
The priest stepped forward, his voice echoing over the gentle sound of the crashing waves below.
"We are gathered here today to unite Damian Costa and Maya Lawson in holy matrimony..."
When it came time for the vows, Damian took both of Maya’s hands in his, looking directly into her eyes.
"Maya," Damian spoke, his deep, commanding voice trembling with raw, unfiltered emotion. "Three years ago, I thought my heart died in a hospital room. I built walls of stone, iron, and blood to protect what I had left. And then, on a rainy night, a brave woman holding a broken mop shattered every wall I had built."
The guests let out a soft, emotional laugh.
"You didn't just save my son’s life, Maya," Damian continued, a single tear escaping his eye. "You saved mine. You gave me a reason to hope, to build, and to love again. I promise to protect you, respect you, and cherish you for all the days of my life."
Maya wiped a tear from her cheek, her voice sweet and clear as she spoke her vows.
"Damian," Maya whispered. "I came into your world broken, lost, and running from my own grief. You didn't hide from my darkness; you walked into it and pulled me into the light. You showed me that love is not something that breaks when tragedy hits—it is the force that heals us. I promise to be your partner, your shelter, and your wife, forever."
"By the power vested in me," the priest proclaimed, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!"

Damian didn't wait. He pulled Maya into his arms, dipping her back slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a passionate, eternal kiss that set off a thunderous wave of applause from the crowd.
Leo jumped up and down, clapping his hands. "Yay! Mommy and Daddy!"
