Chapter 3 - The Boss Returns

The black armored Escalade pulled up to the grand stone steps of the Bellmore estate at 9:00 PM on Thursday night.

Dominic Bellmore stepped out of the rear passenger seat, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored charcoal suit. He was exhausted. Seven days of intense, high-stakes negotiations with rival syndicate bosses in Chicago had tested his patience, but he had successfully closed the deals.

All he wanted was a hot shower, a quiet meal, and the smooth, effortless tranquility that usually greeted him whenever he returned home.

Instead, the moment he stepped through the massive oak front doors, he felt a strange, oppressive chill.

The foyer lights were dim—half the bulbs in the grand chandelier were mysteriously unlit. The air lacked the faint scent of fresh lavender and cedar that always filled the house.

Standing in the center of the marble hall was Vanessa.

Her hair was unwashed and pinned up in a messy bun. She was wearing a crumpled silk dress, her eyes were bloodshot, and her face was distorted with rage.

"Dominic!" she shrieked, running toward him. "Thank God you’re back! You need to fire everyone! Every single person in this godforsaken house!"

Dominic frowned, stepping back slightly to avoid her frantic grasp. His deep, dark eyes swept the hall.

Captain Vance stood near the doorway, standing at rigid attention, his face an unreadable stone mask. Margaret Doyle stood near the archway leading to the dining room, her hands folded neatly over her apron.

"Vanessa, calm down," Dominic said, his voice deep, smooth, and commanding. "What are you talking about? What happened here?"

"They mutinied!" Vanessa cried out, pointing an accusing, trembling finger at Margaret and Vance. "They’ve been sabotaging me for four days! The air conditioning was turned off! They refused to cook for me! The drivers refused to take my calls! They treated me like a prisoner in my own home!"

Dominic slowly turned his gaze to Captain Vance. "Vance? Is this true?"

"Mr. Bellmore," Vance said calmly, stepping forward. "We have followed every standard protocol to the letter. Unfortunately, we experienced several simultaneous maintenance glitches across the estate this week. Furthermore, with staff shortages, operations were running at reduced capacity."

"Staff shortages?" Dominic’s brow furrowed. "Where is Ivy?"

At the mention of Ivy’s name, Vanessa’s face twisted into an ugly expression of pure malice. "That fat, useless maid isn't here! She abandoned her post like the cowardly servant she is!"

Dominic’s atmosphere instantly shifted. The ambient temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he looked down at his fiancée.

"Watch your mouth, Vanessa," Dominic said, his tone quiet, heavy, and laced with absolute authority. "Ivy has been with this family for four years. She has never abandoned her post. What happened?"

Vanessa scoffed, trying to play off her mistake. "She was disrespectful to me! She was acting superior, so I put her in her place! I gave her a long overdue reality check!"

Dominic didn't say a word. He slowly turned his head toward Margaret Doyle.

"Margaret. Tell me what happened."

Margaret stepped forward. She didn't look at Vanessa. She kept her eyes fixed on Dominic.

"On Monday afternoon, Miss Sterling summoned Ivy to the main foyer," Margaret recounted, her voice echoing clearly across the silent hall. "In front of seventy-three staff members, Miss Sterling took a pair of industrial tailoring scissors. She forcibly cut off Ivy’s hair—sixteen years of growth—down to the scalp in places, while insulting her character and her standing in this house."

Dominic froze.

For three terrifying seconds, Dominic Bellmore didn't breathe. The air in the foyer turned suffocating.

Vance, who had seen Dominic face down armed assassins without blinking, noticed the vein pulsing violently on the side of Dominic’s jaw. His knuckles turned white as his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.

Dominic slowly turned his head back to Vanessa. His voice was terrifyingly calm.

"You... cut her hair?"

Vanessa backed up a step, finally realizing the gravity of the aura radiating from the man in front of her. But her arrogance quickly retook control.

"She was getting arrogant, Dominic! You look at her too much! You thank her too much! She’s just a servant! My father’s connections give you political coverage in three states! My family brings you real power! What does a curvy, pathetic maid bring you?!"

Dominic walked toward her. Slowly. Methodically.

Every step he took made Vanessa’s heart hammer wildly against her ribs.

He stopped inches from her face. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't reach for a weapon. He simply looked down at her with an intensity that made her knees feel weak with primal fear.

"Ivy Bennett’s grandmother served my grandmother," Dominic said, his voice a low, terrifying growl. "Ivy Bennett holds the trust of every guard, every driver, every maid, and every business partner who enters this estate. She is the heart of this home."

He leaned in closer, his dark eyes burning into hers.

"You didn't just assault a maid, Vanessa. You attacked the soul of my house. And you showed seventy-three people that you possess the cruelty of a tyrant, but none of the grace required to lead."

Dominic pulled back and looked over his shoulder at Vance.

"Vance."

"Yes, Boss?"

"Escort Miss Sterling to her suite. Place two guards outside her door. She is not to leave that room, she is not to use her phone, and she is not to touch a single piece of property in this house until I decide what to do with her family’s alliance."

"Dominic! You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed as two massive security guards stepped forward and seized her by the arms. "My father will destroy you! My brothers will tear your shipping lines apart!"

Dominic didn't even look back as they dragged her away, kicking and screaming down the corridor.

He turned to Margaret.

"Where is Ivy staying?"

"She is at her grandmother’s old cottage in Cape May, sir," Margaret replied softly.

Dominic pulled his car keys from his coat pocket. "Tell the garage to ready my personal car. I’m going to get her."
