Chapter 7 - The Mastermind in Cuffs

The news of Ivy Bennett’s arrest blew up across regional news outlets within hours.

"MAFIA BOSS’S SENIOR HOUSEMAID ARRESTED IN $2.4M EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL."

Victor Sterling held a press conference outside the city courthouse, declaring that his family was dissolving all business ties with Dominic Bellmore due to "gross incompetence, criminal corruption, and security failures."

Inside the central precinct’s interrogation room, Ivy sat alone at a metal table. She was wearing a gray detention jumpsuit, but she sat with her back perfectly straight, her hands resting calmly on the table.

The door swung open. Victor Sterling walked in, holding a designer leather briefcase. He motioned for the guard to leave and locked the door behind him.

Victor sat down across from Ivy, a triumphant, arrogant smile spread across his weathered face.

"So," Victor said smoothly, leaning back. "You’re the little girl who ruined my daughter’s engagement and thought she could play with the big boys."

Ivy looked at him silently, her brown eyes steady.

"You made a critical mistake, Ivy," Victor mocked. "You thought Dominic Bellmore could protect you. But in our world, paper beats muscle. Financial records, bank accounts, state prosecutors—that’s real power. Right now, the evidence against you is ironclad. You're looking at fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."

Ivy slowly leaned forward, her elbows resting on the table.

"Are you finished, Mr. Sterling?" she asked softly.

Victor’s smile faltered slightly. He had expected her to be weeping, begging for a plea deal, or panicking. Her calm demeanor irritated him deeply.

"What?" Victor sneered.

"I asked if you were finished boasting," Ivy repeated, her voice dripping with cool authority. "Because if you are, I would like to explain to you why you are going to spend the rest of your life in prison."

Victor burst out laughing. "In prison? Me? I framed you, girl! I have judges in my pocket!"

"You didn't frame me, Mr. Sterling," Ivy said, tilting her head. "You took a bait that I laid for you four days ago."

Victor froze. "What are you talking about?"

"When Vanessa attacked me on Monday," Ivy explained calmly, "I knew your family would retaliate financially. I knew you had a mole inside the Bellmore financial routing department—a junior accountant named Steven Miller."

Victor’s face went completely pale.

"Three days ago," Ivy continued, "I personally altered the security protocols on the Sterling-Bellmore Joint Shipping ledger. I intentionally created a security blind spot around the Cayman Islands shell company account. I left the digital keys in a place where Steven Miller could easily steal them."

Victor stood up, slamming his hands on the table. "You're lying!"

"The Cayman Islands account doesn't belong to me, Mr. Sterling," Ivy said, her voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper. "It belongs to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division. It’s a sting account set up eighteen months ago to trace dirty political donations."

Victor felt the air leave his lungs. His knees trembled.

"When your son Marcus executed that $2.4 million wire transfer using my stolen digital signature," Ivy said, a sharp, beautiful smile gracing her lips, "he didn't frame me for theft. He just transferred $2.4 million of illegal campaign slush funds directly into an active FBI wiretap operation."

The door to the interrogation room slammed open.

Three federal agents in dark suits walked in, led by a stern woman holding an arrest warrant. Behind them stood Dominic Bellmore, accompanied by his head legal team.

"Victor Sterling," the lead FBI agent announced, pulling out a pair of federal handcuffs. "You, your sons Marcus and Julian, and your daughter Vanessa are under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and bribery of public officials."

Victor fell back into his chair, his eyes wide with absolute horror. He looked at Dominic, then looked at Ivy.

Dominic walked over to Ivy, pulled a key from his pocket, and unlocked her handcuffs himself. He gently rubbed her wrists, his eyes full of fierce admiration.

"Are you okay?" Dominic asked softly.

May you like

Ivy stood up, smoothing down her jumpsuit as if it were a high-end evening gown. She looked down at Victor Sterling, who was currently being cuffed by the federal agents.

"I told your daughter the same thing on Monday, Mr. Sterling," Ivy said quietly. "Never confuse kindness with permission."
