Chapter 5 - The War of the Families

The news of Vanessa Sterling’s humiliated expulsion from the Bellmore estate hit the underworld and high-society circles like a sledgehammer.
By Friday afternoon, Vanessa’s father, Victor Sterling—a powerful, ruthless political broker—was blind with rage.
Victor summoned an emergency meeting at his private club in downtown Philadelphia, flanked by his two sons, Marcus and Julian, who controlled the city's largest union construction firms.
"Dominic Bellmore lost his mind!" Victor roared, slamming his crystal whiskey glass onto the mahogany desk. "He threw my daughter out over a servant girl! A housemaid!"
"He didn't just throw her out, Father," Marcus, the older brother, said, his face dark with fury. "He stripped our family of our VIP access to the Bellmore docks. He canceled our freight distribution contracts. He’s cutting us out completely."
Vanessa sat in an armchair in the corner, her face pale, her hands trembling with embarrassment and hatred.
"It’s the girl," Vanessa spat, her voice dripping with venom. "Ivy Bennett. She enchanted him. She’s turned the whole estate staff against us! Even Captain Vance took orders from her! If you want to ruin Dominic... you destroy her first."
Victor’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "A housemaid with no family, no fortune, and no political backing. She thinks she can orchestrate the downfall of the Sterling name?"
"What’s the plan, Father?" Julian asked, leaning forward. "Do we take out Bellmore’s shipping lines?"
"No," Victor said, a vicious smile playing on his lips. "Dominic’s empire is built on reputation and control. If we hit his supply lines directly, it triggers a full-scale mafia war that hurts our bottom line. But if we ruin his credibility—if we prove he can't even protect his little maid or maintain order in his own backyard—his board of directors and rival syndicates will abandon him."
Victor looked at his sons.
"Find out everything about this Ivy Bennett. Her past, her family, her debts. Find something we can use to destroy her publicly. And if she has no secrets... manufacture them. I want her arrested, ruined, and thrown in jail before the week is over."
Meanwhile, back at the Bellmore estate, the transformation was immediate upon Ivy’s return.
She did not return as a maid. Dominic had officially appointed her as the Chief Executive Administrator of the Bellmore Holdings, giving her full management authority over the estate, the non-criminal corporate logistics, and staff welfare.
When Ivy stepped through the front doors wearing a sharp, tailored navy blue pant suit, her short chestnut hair styled to perfection, the entire seventy-three-person staff was waiting in the grand hall.
Margaret Doyle stepped forward, tears pooling in her eyes.
"Welcome home, Miss Ivy," Margaret said warmly.
Behind her, the entire staff—chefs, mechanics, guards, housekeepers, and gardeners—erupted into genuine applause.
Ivy felt a wave of warmth wash over her. She looked up at the grand balcony on the second floor. Dominic was standing there, leaning against the marble railing, watching her with a proud, soft smile.
That evening, Ivy was sitting in her new, spacious private office on the second floor, reviewing the estate’s operational ledgers.
A gentle knock sounded at the door. Dominic walked in, carrying two cups of fresh espresso.
He set one down on her desk and leaned against the edge of the wood, watching her work.
"You look like you were born to sit behind that desk," Dominic said smoothly.
Ivy smiled, taking a sip of the coffee. "It’s not much different from what I was doing before, Dominic. The only difference is I don't have to carry a cleaning spray bottle while doing it."
Dominic chuckled, but his expression quickly turned serious.
"Victor Sterling isn't going to let this go," Dominic warned her softly. "He’s a petty, dangerous man. He will try to hit back."
Ivy looked up, her brown eyes clear and unafraid.
"Let him try," Ivy said calmly. "Vanessa thought my hair was my strength. Victor thinks my lack of a rich last name is my weakness. They both make the same mistake, Dominic."
"What mistake?"
"They think power comes from fear," Ivy said, placing her hands on the desk. "They don't realize that loyalty built on love and respect is an impenetrable fortress."

Dominic looked at her, his heart swelling with an emotion he had spent his whole life avoiding. He reached out, his hand gently covering hers on the desk.
"I won't let anyone hurt you again, Ivy," Dominic whispered. "I swear it on my life."
