Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Ledger

By noon, the clouds over Pine Ridge hung heavy and gray, promising more snow.

Dante pushed his wheelchair into a narrow alleyway between the town library and an abandoned pharmacy. Finding a dry patch of concrete behind a wooden fence, he stood up effortlessly. His legs were strong, his frame towering and imposing as he discarded the blanket.

He pulled a small, secure satellite phone from his hidden jacket lining—the only electronic device he had allowed himself to bring. He dialed a private number.

"Speak," a sharp, precise female voice answered on the second ring.

It was Valen, Dante’s chief of intelligence and the only person in Boston who remained fiercely loyal to him rather than the Moretti family apparatus.

"Status on my uncle," Dante commanded flatly.

"Aldo moved fast after you left, Dante," Valen reported, her tone laced with urgent concern. "The moment you vanished, he convened an emergency meeting of the syndicate council. He claimed you suffered a mental breakdown following Mick’s death and declared himself acting boss of the family operations."

Dante’s expression remained unchanged. "And his movements?"

"He dispatched two teams of enforcement contractors south yesterday," Valen continued. "They're led by Julian Vane. They crossed into West Virginia three hours ago."

Julian Vane. Aldo’s personal assassin—a cold, sadist of a man who specialized in clearing land titles through arson and intimidation.

"Why Pine Ridge, Valen?" Dante asked, his eyes narrowing as he looked out toward the snow-covered mountains. "What did Mick leave behind in this town?"

Paper rustled on the other end of the line as Valen reviewed hidden files.

"Thirty years ago, before Mick became your driver, he worked as a courier for your father and Aldo," Valen explained. "Aldo used a shell company—Appalachian Resources Trust—to acquire thousands of acres of land deeds across the Pine Ridge valley. They discovered a massive lithium and rare-earth mineral deposit sitting directly under the town."

Dante’s jaw tightened. "A land grab."

"Worse," Valen replied. "The townspeople don't own the mineral rights—except for one crucial property sitting right in the center of the main water table. The property where Miller’s Corner Bakery stands. The bank holding their mortgage, Ridge Financial, is secretly owned by Aldo. Aldo has been artificially driving the bakery into bankruptcy to force a foreclosure and seize the deed."

Dante let out a long, slow breath. The puzzle pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity.

Mick Callahan hadn't just driven Dante around Boston for twenty-two years; he had carried the crushing guilt of helping Aldo set up the trap that was now about to destroy Clara Miller’s family. Mick’s final letter was not a request for forgiveness—it was a plea for Dante to stop the monster his own family had created.

"Dante," Valen added softly. "Julian Vane isn't just coming to enforce the foreclosure. Aldo gave him explicit orders: if you are found in that town, you are not to return to Boston alive."

"Let them come," Dante said coldly. "Keep monitoring Aldo’s private accounts. Send me the full financial audit of Ridge Financial within the hour."

"Dante... you're alone down there," Valen warned. "You don't have your guards. You don't have your weapons."

Dante looked down at his calloused hands—hands that had built an empire, hands that had just held a fifteen-dollar gift of bread from a girl with nothing left to give.

"I have everything I need," Dante said, and hung up.
