Chapter 4 - The Bank Manager’s Reckoning

The interior of Ridge Financial Bank on Main Street was designed to look respectable: brass fixtures, polished mahogany desks, and plush green carpets.

At 9:00 AM Friday morning, Mr. Arthur Henderson, the bank manager, sat behind his desk, humming to himself as he counted a stack of loan documents. He was a small, balding man with slick spectacles and an air of bloated self-importance.

The heavy front glass door opened, and the bell chimed.

Henderson didn't look up immediately. "We're not open for public transactions for another ten minutes..."

"Mr. Henderson," a deep, commanding voice interrupted.

Henderson looked up, annoyed—and froze.

Standing before his desk was not a local farmer or a desperate small-town debtor. It was a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a impeccably tailored navy-blue cashmere coat over an expensive suit. His dark hair was styled, his dark eyes fixed on Henderson with a cold, terrifying authority that made the room feel instantly devoid of oxygen.

Beside him stood Valen, wearing a sharp grey trousers suit, carrying a slim leather briefcase.

"Who... who are you?" Henderson stammered, standing up instinctively, his hands sweating. "How did you get in here?"

Dante didn't answer. He walked slowly around the desk, taking the high-backed leather executive chair for himself and leaning back.

Valen stepped forward, opening her briefcase and sliding a thick blue folder onto the desk in front of Henderson.

"As of 8:00 AM today," Valen declared flatly, "Vanguard Capital Holdings has acquired eighty-five percent of the voting shares of Ridge Financial's parent institution. You are currently speaking to Mr. Dante Moretti—the majority owner of this bank, and your new sole employer."

Henderson turned pale as ash. "Moretti...?"

He knew the name. Every banker in the eastern sea board knew the name Moretti. It was a name associated with billions of dollars, political connections, and ruthless, total obliteration of anyone who crossed them.

"I... I was not informed of a corporate takeover!" Henderson gasped, reaching frantically for his desk phone.

"Touch that phone," Dante spoke, his deep voice slicing through the room like a razor, "and you will spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary for banking fraud, bribery, and wire collusion."

Henderson’s hand froze an inch above the receiver. Sweat poured down his forehead. "What... what fraud?"

Dante leaned forward, placing his elbows on the mahogany desk, holding Henderson in an unyielding grip.

"Let's talk about Appalachian Resources Trust," Dante said smoothly. "Let's talk about the two hundred thousand dollars wired to your personal offshore account in the Cayman Islands last month from an account signed by Julian Vane."

Henderson dropped into his chair, his knees failing him completely.

"You intentionally altered the interest rates on the commercial loan for Miller’s Corner Bakery," Dante continued, his voice cold as arctic ice. "You manufactured fake tax defaults to force a summary foreclosure before the town could realize the lithium value under their feet."

"I was following orders!" Henderson wept, wringing his hands in sheer terror. "A man named Vane... he threatened my family! He said if I didn't push the Millers out by Friday, he’d burn my house down!"

Dante stood up, adjusting his cuffs.

"Effective immediately, Henderson," Dante said, looking down at the trembling man, "the foreclosure against Miller’s Corner Bakery is permanently canceled. The outstanding balance of forty thousand dollars has been paid in full by my personal foundation."

Henderson blinked, stunned. "Paid... in full?"

"Furthermore," Dante added, leaning closer until his face was inches from Henderson's, "you will issue a public apology to Samuel and Clara Miller, along with a twenty-year zero-interest commercial grant for equipment upgrades."

"Yes... yes, sir! Anything you say, Mr. Moretti!" Henderson nodded frantically.

"And if Julian Vane or my uncle Aldo contacts you again," Dante murmured, his eyes flashing with lethal intent, "you will tell them that the property was bought by an anonymous investor. If you breathe my name to anyone, Henderson... you will discover what happens when a bank manager vanishes."

"I swear! I won't say a word!" Henderson cried.

Dante turned and walked out of the bank, Valen following close behind.
