Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

That evening, a heavy blizzard swept through the mountain valley, burying Pine Ridge under a foot of white powder.

Inside Miller’s Corner Bakery, the air was warm and rich with the smell of roasting meats and freshly baked crusty bread.

Samuel Miller, a white-haired man with kind, tired eyes and an oxygen cannula under his nose, sat in a comfortable armchair near the fireplace in the back room. Clara sat on the rug beside him, holding a letter that had just been delivered by a bank courier an hour prior.

"I don't understand it, Dad," Clara whispered, reading the parchment paper for the fifth time. "The bank... they canceled the debt. They said an anonymous charitable foundation paid the entire balance and awarded us a grant."

Samuel stroked his daughter’s hair, tears pooling in his eyes. "God works in mysterious ways, sweetheart. Someone saw our trouble and reached out a hand."

Clara looked out the frost-covered window toward the dark street. She thought of Daniel—the strange, quiet man in the wheelchair with the piercing eyes who had taken her fifteen dollars and promised that people couldn't take things forever.

Could it be him? she wondered. No... he's just a poor man sitting in the cold.

Suddenly, the front door of the bakery banged open with a violent crash.

The bell shattered onto the floor. Three men in dark leather coats stepped into the warm shop, bringing the freezing blizzard wind with them.

At their head stood Julian Vane. He was tall, thin, with a pale face and a long scar running across his left jawline. His eyes were cold, dead, like those of a reptile.

Clara stood up instantly, stepping in front of her father's chair, her heart hammering against her ribs. "We're closed! You can't be in here!"

Julian smiled—a slow, terrifying stretch of thin lips—as he locked the front door behind him and flipped the 'Open' sign to 'Closed'.

"Miss Miller," Julian drawled, his voice oily and smooth. "We're not customers. We're here to discuss your property."

"The debt is paid!" Clara declared, holding up the bank document. "The bank cleared our deed an hour ago!"

Julian let out a dry, harsh laugh, stepping closer until he stood over her. He reached out and snatched the paper from her hand, ripping it into four pieces and tossing them onto the floor.

"A piece of paper doesn't mean anything in these mountains, little girl," Julian sneered. "Mr. Aldo Moretti wants this land. And what the Moretti family wants, they take."

Samuel coughed painfully from his chair, trying to stand up. "Get out of my shop! Leave my daughter alone!"

One of Julian’s thugs stepped forward, roughly pushing the old man back down into his chair, causing his oxygen machine to rattle violently.

"Dad!" Clara screamed, rushing to her father's side.

Julian pulled a silver zippo lighter from his pocket, flicking it open. The yellow flame danced in the dim light of the bakery.

"You have until midnight to pack your bags and leave town," Julian threatened softly, leaning over Clara. "If you're still in this building by midnight... we burn it down with both of you inside. Do you understand me?"

Clara looked up at him, her hazel eyes blazing with defiant fury despite her terror. "You're monsters!"

"We're businessmen, sweetie," Julian laughed, turning toward the door. "Midnight. Not a minute later."

They stepped back out into the roaring blizzard, slamming the door behind them.

Clara collapsed beside her father's chair, burying her face in his lap, weeping bitterly as the storm raged outside.
