Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Penthouse

While the boardroom descended into chaos, two black SUVs pulled up outside the ultra-exclusive residential tower where Nathan and Victoria’s penthouse occupied the top three floors.
Grace sat in the back of the lead vehicle alongside two female child-protective service officers and a senior detective. Lily sat safely between them, playing quietly with a small digital tablet, completely unaware of the drama swirling around her.
“Are you sure about this, Grace?” Detective Miller asked, adjusting his cap. “We can take the child up while you wait in the car.”
“No,” Grace replied firmly, her eyes fixed on the towering glass building. “Victoria needs to see my face when this is over. She needs to know that she didn't break me.”
The elevator doors chimed as they ascended directly to the penthouse private foyer. The heavy oak door was unlocked. Grace pushed it open, stepping into the sprawling living space where sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
“Victoria?” Grace called out, her voice echoing in the vast, silent room.
A rustling sound came from the master hallway. Moments later, Victoria emerged. She wasn't wearing her usual designer gala wear; instead, she wore a silk bathrobe, her hair disheveled, a glass of amber whiskey clutched tightly in her hand. Her eyes were bloodshot, and her face was twisted with manic fury.
“You,” Victoria whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at Grace. Then her gaze dropped to the little girl standing safely behind Grace’s leg. “And the bastard child.”
“It’s over, Victoria,” Grace said evenly, stepping forward to shield Lily. “The police have the server logs. Nathan exposed the embezzlement at the board meeting an hour ago. You lost.”
Victoria threw her whiskey glass against the wall, shattering the crystal into a million sparkling fragments across the hardwood floor.
“I didn't lose!” Victoria screamed, lunging forward before Detective Miller stepped between them, clicking handcuffs into readiness. “That empire belongs to me! My father built it with your blood, Nathan! You think a common maid and her illegitimate brat are going to take away everything I was promised?”
“She was never a common maid, Victoria,” a deep, commanding voice resonated from the private elevator entrance.
Nathan stepped into the penthouse, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened. His eyes were colder than ice.
Victoria spun around, her manic expression faltering as she looked at the man she had planned to marry. “Nathan... tell them this is a mistake. We’re supposed to be married next week. We’re family—!”
“Don't you ever use that word,” Nathan interrupted, stepping between Victoria and his family. “My father’s sins are his own, but your crimes are yours alone. You tried to frame an innocent woman. You tried to physically harm a four-year-old child over money. And you thought you could manipulate me like a puppet.”
Victoria’s knees buckled slightly. She stared at Nathan, realizing for the first time that the man she thought she had completely wrapped around her finger was gone. In his place stood a man who would burn the entire world to ash to protect his daughter.
“Take her away,” Nathan instructed quietly.
Detective Miller stepped forward, firmly grasping Victoria’s wrists as the cold steel cuffs clicked into place. As she was dragged toward the elevator, Victoria turned her head, fixing Grace with a look of pure, venomous hatred.

“You haven't won,” Victoria hissed over her shoulder. “The Ashford trusts are untouchable by civil courts. You’ll never see a dime of that money!”
“Keep the money,” Grace replied softly, watching the elevator doors close. “I have everything I ever wanted right here.”
