The mahogany study was dead silent except for the low hum of the desktop computer and the erratic ticking of an antique grandfather clock in the corner.

One Saturday afternoon, Grace sat on the back patio overlooking the sprawling gardens, reviewing grant applications for the foundation. The sun was warm, and the scent of blooming roses drifted on the breeze.

Footsteps sounded on the stone paving. Nathan walked out carrying a tray with two glasses of iced lemonade and a plate of fresh fruit. He set it down on the glass table and sat down across from her.

Grace interrupted him, placing her other hand over his. “Stop looking backward, Nathan. We can’t change the past. If any of those terrible things hadn't happened, I wouldn't have fought as hard as I did, and Lily wouldn't be the fierce, brilliant little girl she is today. Every scar brought us to this exact moment.”
