Chapter 6 - A Quiet Evening

That evening, the grand mansion felt entirely different. The oppressive shadows and cold formality that had defined the estate for years were gone, replaced by the warm, inviting scent of home-cooked pasta and the sound of soft laughter echoing down the hallway.
In the spacious kitchen—the very kitchen where Victoria had once raised a hockey stick in cold malice—Grace stood by the stove stirring a pot of marinara sauce. Her hair was tied back in a loose ponytail, and she wore a comfortable cotton apron over a simple sweater.
Lily sat at the marble island, carefully coloring in a coloring book with a pack of brand-new crayons Nathan had bought her earlier that afternoon.
“Look, Mommy!” Lily held up a picture of a rather lopsided purple dog. “I made this for Daddy!”
Grace smiled, wiping her hands on a dish towel as footsteps approached behind her. Strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist, pulling her back against a warm chest. Nathan rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of vanilla and lavender.
“Is that purple dog for me?” Nathan murmured, kissing the side of Grace’s neck.
Lily giggled, sliding off her stool and running over to hug his leg. “Yes! Because dogs are cool, and you’re cool, Daddy!”
Nathan crouched down, scooping Lily up into his arms and tossing her gently into the air as the little girl shrieked with delighted laughter. He caught her against his chest, pressing a loud kiss to her cheek.
“You know what else is cool?” Nathan whispered conspiratorially. “Ice cream before dinner.”
“Yay!” Lily cheered, clapping her hands.
Grace raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms with a mock-serious expression. “Oh, really? And what does the doctor say about ice cream before dinner, Mr. Cole?”
Nathan grinned, walking over to wrap his free arm around Grace’s waist, pulling both of them close. “The doctor says that under the special circumstances of our newly established household, exceptions must be made for exceptional little girls—and exceptional mothers.”
Grace’s heart fluttered, the last remaining traces of the fear and pain from her years in hiding finally melting away completely.

“You’re spoiling her,” Grace whispered, though her eyes were shining with undisguised affection.
“I have five years of lost time to make up for,” Nathan replied softly, his gaze locking onto hers with profound intensity. “For both of you.”
