Chapter 1 - The Ashes of the Estate

The heavy oak doors of the Cárdenas estate slammed shut behind Verónica, her frantic footsteps fading into the cold mountain night air. Inside the grand dining room, the atmosphere was heavy with shock, relief, and deep grief.
Alejandro remained on his knees beside his mother’s wheelchair, his forehead pressed against her frail hands. For months, he had been a man blinded by corporate success, signing checks for top-tier specialists, completely unaware that the woman sharing his bed was poisoning his mother in the dark.
Doña Mercedes stroked her son’s hair, her fingers thin but remarkably steady.
"Stand up, Alejandro," she said softly, her raspy voice gaining strength with every second. "A man of your stature does not cry on marble floors while his house is still burning."
Alejandro wiped his eyes, stepping back as he looked up at Lucía. The 43-year-old cook stood near the dining table, her hands resting calmly over her apron, her face unreadable.
"Lucía," Alejandro said, his voice raw with emotion. "You saved my mother’s life. You did in three days what seven private hospitals couldn't do in three months."
"I didn't do anything extraordinary, Don Alejandro," Lucía replied modestly. "I only paid attention to what others ignored. When a woman refuses food, it is either because she wants to die or because she wants to survive. Doña Mercedes is a woman of the soil—she has too much fight in her to simply give up."
Teresa stepped forward from the kitchen archway, her shoulders shaking with quiet sobs. "Don Alejandro... please forgive me. I wanted to tell you about the bleach, but Señora Verónica said she would report my son to the police for theft. He’s only twenty... he works in your construction warehouse in Querétaro..."
"You are safe, Teresa," Alejandro promised firmly, placing a reassuring hand on the elderly housekeeper's shoulder. "Your son’s job is secure. But I need you to show me everything. Every cabinet, every bottle, every drawer Verónica had access to."
Thirty minutes later, Alejandro, accompanied by two trusted private security guards he had summoned from his firm’s headquarters, entered his wife’s private dressing room.
What they found went far beyond a desperate daughter-in-law trying to inherit an estate.
Hidden inside a locked floor safe behind Verónica’s designer shoe rack was a metal box containing three small glass vials of industrial-grade chemical compounds, along with a forged power of attorney document. The document, bearing Doña Mercedes’ forged signature and a notary stamp from a crooked legal firm in Guadalajara, ceded total ownership of the historic Cárdenas family hacienda to a front company owned by Verónica’s secret lover—a disgraced former land developer named Rodrigo Santos.
Alejandro’s hands shook as he read the legal papers under the bright lights of the dressing room.
"She wasn't just trying to starve my mother," Alejandro whispered to his chief security officer, Carlos. "She was trying to declare her mentally incapacitated so she could sign over the land deeds before killing her."

"We need to go to the state prosecutor immediately, Don Alejandro," Carlos advised. "Verónica hasn't just left the house; she’s gone straight to Rodrigo Santos."
Alejandro looked out the window toward the dark hills surrounding Querétaro. "Let them run. They think money and forged stamps can buy a family’s legacy. They are about to learn what happens when a Cárdenas fights back."
