Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over the Portals

Lucía’s prediction proved correct sooner than anyone anticipated.

Three days after Verónica’s flight, a major public scandal erupted in the financial press across Central Mexico. Front-page headlines in the local newspapers claimed that Cárdenas Construction—Alejandro’s multi-million-dollar firm—was facing a federal audit for illegally acquiring government historic land permits near the Querétaro aqueduct.

The source of the leaked documents was none other than Verónica, who had handed over stolen internal files from Alejandro’s office safe to a tabloid journalist.

Inside his corporate office in downtown Querétaro, Alejandro sat at his broad mahogany desk, surrounded by four frantic legal partners and his head of public relations.

"It’s a media ambush, Don Alejandro," his lead lawyer, Licenciado Morales, warned. "The state historic preservation board has suspended our building permits on the new commercial plaza project downtown. Every day the site is frozen costs us over two hundred thousand pesos in penalties."

"Can we trace where Verónica is staying?" Alejandro asked, his hands clasped tightly under his chin.

"She’s hiding in a private compound in San Miguel de Allende," Morales revealed. "The property belongs to a shell company controlled by Rodrigo Santos. They are using the media scandal to drop your stock value so Santos’s investment firm can launch a hostile takeover bid for your board seats."

Alejandro stood up, walking to the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the city. He had spent fifteen years building Cárdenas Construction into an empire, but in doing so, he had allowed his personal life to rot from the inside out. He had trusted the wrong woman, neglected his mother, and ignored the subtle signs of corruption within his own circle.

His cell phone rang. It was Doña Mercedes calling from the estate.

"Alejandro," her voice was firm, completely devoid of the frailty that had defined her three months ago. "Teresa told me about the news on the television."

"Don't worry about the business, Mama," Alejandro said, trying to soften his tone. "I have the best lawyers in the state handling it."

"Lawyers are good for writing papers, Alejandro," Doña Mercedes replied sharply. "But when a coyote enters your barn, you don't send a clerk with a pen—you take a torch. Come home for dinner. Lucía has prepared something you need to see."

When Alejandro returned to the estate that evening, he found Doña Mercedes sitting in the central library, surrounded by old, leather-bound trunks that hadn't been opened since his father’s death ten years ago.

Lucía was standing beside her, holding a stack of aged, yellowed deeds and hand-drawn land maps bearing the official seal of the Mexican federal government from 1954.

"What is all this, Mama?" Alejandro asked, stepping into the room.

"This is the truth about the Santos family," Doña Mercedes declared, setting her hand over a heavy iron key. "Rodrigo Santos claims my husband stole the southern pastures. He’s using that lie to justify what he and Verónica did to me. But your father kept every original land survey signed by the Governor himself."

Doña Mercedes looked up at her son, her eyes burning with pure resolve. "We are not going to defend ourselves in the newspapers, Alejandro. We are going to destroy their lies in open court."
